I still want to know if the transmission has a drain plug like my Escape (6f35 trans) for a drain and fill DIY service. The escape is so easy to do I'm curious if the maverick has one as well. I change mine fairly frequently as its so easy to do while you're under there anyway for an oil change. IIRC the drain plug on the escape is a square head 4 sided 11mm pipe thread plug. Since there's no serviceable filter anyway it doesn't hurt to just do a dump and fill which in reality only replaces a portion of the total capacity but does keep the fluid freshened up if you change it on a regular basis. I'm not a fan of the manufacturer recommended fluid change intervals on things like that at all.

I think its great that you actually get those fluids changed. Most folks don't even think about stuff like transmission, differential, or PTU fluids and they get baked.

As for the PS fluid there is none since the maverick as most new vehicles have electric power steering and no hydraulic system/pump or fluid.
To change the tranny fluid on the 8F35 8 speed transmission for the 2.0L ecoboot engines you do the following according to the service manual

Draining

1. Remove the underbody shield underneath the engine in the front, should be 15 screws in total holding it in.

2. Loosen the drain plug and drain fluid, retighten and torque to 124 in. / lbs

Filling.

1. Remove the air cleaner then transmission vent cap on top of tranny.

2. Initial fill of through vent cap of either
a. Transmission overhaul (includes main control and torque converter drain) Volume : 6.34 qt ( 6 L)

b. Main control overhaul or replace (with out transmission overhaul) Volume : 5.28 qt ( 5 L)

Fluid : Motorcraft® MERCON® ULV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-12-QULV (WSS-M2C949-A, ) (MERCON® ULV)

3. Reinstall transmission vent cap then air cleaner.

4. Get transmission fluid up to 185 - 200 F.

5. While engine is not running remove the air cleaner then transmission vent cap again

6. Reinstall the air cleaner.

6. Have engine running and in park with tranny fluid at 185 - 200 F

7. Remove transmission fluid leveling plug. It will be on one of sides of the transmission by the drive axles.

8. Add fluid through vent cap at about .5 pint increments until the fluid is even with the transmission fluid leveling plug hole.

9. Reinstall the transmission fluid leveling plug.

10. Uninstall the air cleaner

11. Reinstall the transmission vent cap

12. Reinstall the air cleaner

13. Reinstall the underbody shield.

Wow 2 cords oak firewood DRY = 7,000 lbs plus trailer.
The wood isn't oak. Usually a mix of Maple and ash with a little white birch. But your weight isn't too far off when you account for the trailer we figured somewhere near 5500-6000. It's not something I do on a daily basis but the truck handles it fine just kills my gas milage

I’ve attached a copy of the oil analysis that I had done on my truck. I had the trans serviced at 25k miles since I have 1k-1.2k pounds of payload that I haul everyday (self employed, bought this as my work truck). The owners manual says to service at 30k miles for severe duty cycle so I was a little early, but I wanted it taken care of. I’m currently a little over 33k miles on the odometer and the transmission still shifts like new 👍

Did you order with FX4 pkg, larger radiator and transmission oil cooler? Any thought to ordering the Tremor pkg ? Any issues with rusting from battery acids?

Nope I didn’t get the FX4 or 4K tow packages as I wanted the ‘highway’ gearing of the regular. I would love to add a trans cooler though 👍

The Tremor would be interesting, I love that you can ‘lock’ it in AWD and the rear diff, but it lost a couple hundred pounds of payload, which is a bummer.

Yeah the batteries do off gas quite a bit, I did get the spray in bed liner though, and I sprayed the undercarriage with fluid film last fall, so far so good. I do have the hard roll up bed cover, and some of the mounting hardware has begun to corrode, so that will need attention at some point.

Have you tried any of the zinc cold galvanizing sprays to prevent or stop rust?

Thanks. Seems like a pain lol. My Honda had a drain plug that popped open with a 3/8" ratchet and I just refilled it through the dipstick.

So no way to check the transmission fluid without changing it?

You could use an injector syringe like the ones you use to mix 2 stroke engine oil with a long enough plastic tube and drop it into the fill hole after removing the vent cap to draw some fluid out.

You could also crack the drain plug and catch some spillage but that requires removing the underbody shield first.

Thanks. Sounds pretty similar to doing the 6f35. I just use a 7qt paint measuring clear bucket with the liquid level increments on the side. I drain the fluid, let it drip it for awhile then put the plug back in and refill with the exact same amount from the top vent cap hole.. On the escape its always exactly 4.5 quarts. Much easier than doing the level plug procedure even though its not a bad idea to check it that way once in awhile.

I’ve honestly never even heard of the stuff before, I’ll have to look into it. Does it spray on like paint (meaning I have to mask off surrounding areas) or does it only have a chemical reaction when hitting corrosion?

Check out Rustoleum.com and CRC.com as well as others, for the work you do with the acid it will cause rusting and this would be a reduced cost option . Most of these are spray on some are available
in qts and gallons .

Loved my Close Ratio Rock Cruncher 4 speed back in the late 60's early 70's behind my built 327 in a 55 chevy. Third gear was just an extension of 2nd and when I hit it ..... OHHHHHHH!!!!

I pull a 2.5/3k trailer with mine on a daily basis since i'm a self employed diesel mechanic and i was really suprised at how good this truck handles it, specially in tow mode! Feels better than my previous silverado 2500 6.0! I'll try to get my oil analysed as well when i get to that point! I would also like to know if the tranmssion is easily serviceable or is it junk lile my fiesta st where it has to be 11mm under the fill hole

I totally agree that the EcoBoost pulls really strong when hauling or towing. They obviously didn’t want the Mav to take too much away from potential Ranger customers, but I think it could safely pull 5k lbs no problem depending on the terrain and driver.

I don’t recommend anyone to do that or overload their trucks as there are safer ways to regularly haul heavier loads. However, I do think it’s more capable than advertised
