Hi,

I love the Maverick. I love the way it looks, how it drives, and the interior, and I love the size of it. It’s not a monster.

I currently have an Ecoboost XLT with 4K tow on order. I currently drive a 2016 Golf, which is frankly an even better daily driver than the Maverick - more luxury, more features, better performance, better handling, more nimble, and it has better fuel economy than a Maverick. But it can’t haul anything. My wife has a rav4.

My initial thought was to sell the Golf and get the Maverick as my daily, and for extra capability and utility.

But then I got the idea from a coworker to maybe keep the Golf as a daily and get a used full size pickup (eg. f150) for when I need to haul or pull.

Cost wise, it works out to be about the same. But it’s still an extra vehicle to insure and maintain, and a used pickup isn’t a new pickup. But the advantage is that an f150 is better at being a truck, and the Golf is better at driving to work, getting groceries, and driving my kid around, etc. I don’t love the idea of a monstrous pickup but the practically is undeniable.

My truck needs are: a utility vehicle for housework - trips to the hardware / home / garden stores and camping (family drive in campgrounds, not backcountry).

We’re a family of 3: 2 parents and a 7 year old girl. We currently use the rav4 for camping and it’s PACKED. The rav4 actually has MORE cargo space than Maverick (38 cubic feet vs 33 cubic feet), so I’m worried the Maverick isn’t going to work. An f150 has about 50-65 cubic feet. I would like to pull a trailer some day if I can convince the wife. I think the Maverick would have enough space if we do get a trailer, but in the meantime it’s going to be very tight. I wish the bed in the Maverick was a bit bigger.

Thoughts?

We're a family of 4 and camp a ton, have zero issues stuffing all our gear into our VW jetta and getting around campsites; obviously the Maverick now provides even more space and capability (far more than we need). I'd consider what we were bringing camping before buying a new vehicle.

Personally, I have no idea why you are considering another vehicle. Absolutely love our Maverick, but you like your golf and have the RAV4 when you need more space, what's the rush in getting a truck? You don't really present a compelling reason to get a truck, even less for getting a full-size. I think you'll regret it if you get a full-size truck without having a real need.

As a guy who rides dual sport motorcycles, this sounds awfully familiar. You want a do it all bike, it's not going to do anything really well. If you had a golf and a full size, you'd have a real truck and a real car. It's like having a Ducati and motocross bike. Plus, you already have the v dub, and you can go get a used pickup without jumping through hoops for 2 years.

Never said I was in a rush. Not really interested in having my decision to get a truck be questioned. In the last few months I’ve already had several needs for a truck in just the last few months: building a pool (excavating and filling / leveling with dirt and sand), replacing 2 fence panels, camping, and hauling yard waste. Future projects are coming too, including a landscaping project to add some some shrubs/ garden area in the back of our house, and aerating the lawn (need to rent an aerator). Also, as mentioned, planning to hopefully get a trailer at a future point. A used pickup can be had for fairly cheap, and I’m the fact that it gets terrible gas mileage won’t matter if I don’t drive it often. Not sure how you can camp with a family of four with a Jetta. I see zero people at any of the campgrounds I go to with a vehicle that small, let alone with a family of 4. Campgrounds are usually about 2/3 pick up trucks (mostly full size) and RVs, and the rest SUVs or minivans.

Yep, exactly. Truthfully I would love to have something that’s even more sporty and fun to drive as my daily - eg. GTI, civic si, verloster n. Have a secondary, mostly unused pickup enables that possibility.

We owned Golfs and GTI's steadily since 2008, and enjoyed every minute. They are great cars, and everywhere else in the world, they are used for EVERYTHING. It wasn't uncommon to see a Golf TDI pulling a small camper at 50mph on the toll road in Italy during summer vacation.

The most efficient 2016 Golf EPA rating I see is 29 combined (25 city). The hybrid Maverick is 37 combined (42 city). If you're using it as a commuter the mav should be much more efficient.

That said. If you like both of your cars but need to haul every so often why not just get a utility trailer for the RAV4? Much cheaper than an f150.

It really just dwells down to your needs and for everyone it is different

I plan to be getting rid of my 2016 Golf GTI as my daily when the Maverick arrives. I don't have a fully loaded GTI so the Maverick actually has some stuff my GTI does not like automated braking, blind spot and the 360 stuff. For me it is a win to get rid of the GTI for the Maverick cause my needs have changed since I got it. I am not too concerned about MPG but it is relatively the same for the 2.0 EcoBoost and I get AWD

I do a lot of mountain biking and camping so the Maverick is going to be a more capable vehicle all around for my needs without worrying about ruining the interior. My GTI went places it had no business being and I have been lucky on multiple occasions. That being said I also have an 06 MX-5 and a 73 Super Beetle for when I want to just cruise about.
