Buying a car on the other side of the country would defeat any cost savings getting it back to California. It's a shame there's not a dealer on the west coast offering a similar deal with great service.
It would only cost a grand and a road trip to save +/- $2k - not how everyone wants to spend their own time though - you could also open up a points credit card and use the new user rewards for some of the trip costs. I bought my wife's car in Seattle and drove it back to Minnesota, used points for the flight and hotels, cost me food and gas - this was a year ago so I think the flight was about $100 bucks too - a great quiet road trip across the northern states! Also saved about $3k on the car.

$100 deposit and you felt pressured? This dealer will sell your build before the end of the day when you decline to purchase. I doubt if they are really concerned. Sounds like someone was trying to cover their butt after forgetting to ask for the deposit up front.

Dealership here isn't requiring a deposit.

Maybe I'm naïve but I feel partial to the dealers that have good ratings via Google or Cars.com etc. like 4.5/5 stars or higher. I feel like people have spoken, that that's a fair dealer, and they will probably try to protect that rating because it's likely a big deal to them too.

I'm not sure I would start the buying process from a 3 stars or less dealer even if they had a really great deal. At least, I'd be extra cautious.
That's probably good advice.
Btw, I had a buddy who was a car dealer. I never bought a car from him, but he did give me some pointers though, on stuff to avoid with most dealers.

Even that would be okay, if I were pretty sure I was getting the vehicle, and of course if it were fully refundable, in case the deal didn't go through.

You are in California right? If so all deposits are refundable

If you ordered 1 (or 2) and decide against buying it/them when they arrive,,,,,, How long do you think the dealer will be “stuck” with them in stock?
I’ll take a guess:
5-10 minutes
Well sure. In fact, when the dealer was asking us to order one, with no obligations, he even said, we hope you actually buy them, but even if you don't, this is the only way we can get them on the lot for people to see. So plz order one...

So the dealership called me today and said, they forgot to get a $100 deposit from my GF and I. My response... "Well we are not $100 sure we want them" 😀 lol The dealer kind of choked up for a second, then came back and said, don't worry about it. We will call you when they come in. I told him, cool thanks. We will come down and maybe discuss it some more. Plus maybe a test drive...
As I've said, their is a lot I really like about the Maverick, but with my circumstances, it's probably not a smart thing for me to do.
I still think my GF should get hers, but I can't pressure her at all either, in case anything hits the fan later...
I think she got a little upset with me, and said I was kind of a smartass with the dealer. Dealers are just so money hungry. I like to watch them squirm 😀 lol
My dealer didn't ask for ANY deposit whatsoever here in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Almost made me feel uneasy like the order wouldn't go through. Anyone else not have to pay anything to make an order?

That makes way more sense, thank you for explaining. I was under the impression it had to be delivered to the dealer first before it was transferred.
ONLY part not mentioned is if once the vehicle gets to the CD and you choose NOT to buy the truck, YOU WILL have to pay to have the truck sent to the buying dealer. The CD dealer does NOT own the vehicle. AND that is where the West Coast vs East Coast deals disappear. I believe Chapman stated they will no longer do CD's to the west coast because of the Non-refundable deposit to ship the truck back to PA from the west coast.

But if you make the decision to use a CD, YOU'LL have to locate a dealer that will perform CD for you. YOU'll have to make a Non-refundable deposit for the shipping costs.
