In my experience, roof racks always end in auto paint loss at the attachment point for the towers.

Nice, I was just thinking a rack behind window and my hitch extender in vertical position would do the job. I was thinking it should touch the bottom of bed like yours, and maybe use the wood divider pocket, and was thinking to secure to D-ring threaded holes, tie down threaded holes, and/or side cargo rails. but I like your idea to just strap it to the D-rings.

On a previous vehicleI put clear vinyl down where the towers mount. 3 years later I removed everything, no paint loss or damage of any kind.

my plan is to get the hitch extender and throw a flag on it... my longest is a 15.5.

That's GREAT. I do want to add a rack over the cab, but would hate to lose any Alto Blue as a result. Any recommendations on the brand of clear vinyl you used?

13ft I just folded the tailgate flat and let it over hang just some straps and done

My solution was Harbor Freight and magnetic trailer lights. VERY sturdy and easy in and out.

Harbor frieght, cheap and easy , throw a flag on kayaks. I can even close the lid. the bed holds both of my kayaks easily. Plus being 60 years old i didnt think i could lift them on the roof style rack After a day on the water ….
