Years ago I worked at an auto auction. They hosted Ford Motor Company dealers 2 times a month. Most of what we had was leased rental cars. Companies like Hertz and Avis would lease town cars Tauruses, Tempos etc. They had to turn them back within 2 years and under 20K on the odometers. Our job was to do damage estimates, and repair whatever was wrong with the cars. The ford dealers would buy these up and sell em as used vehicles on their lots.
Around four years ago, a friend bought a car direct from one of the big rental car companies. A year later the exhaust fell off and the dealer refused to fix it under warranty claiming the car had prior damage. Sure enough, later on a repaired crack in the front bumper appears when the filler and paint flakes away. He’s still pissed at that rental company for not disclosing the damage during the purchase process, and will never rent from them again.

The reason he got it direct, was because it was probably rejected from the auction. We knew what to check for as far as frame/unibody damage, and pull points on a frame straightener on FoMoCo rental/lease units. Anything suspect, it would go on a 2 post lift, and we would start looking.

Rejected cars the rental companies could not return to Ford. They would sell them on their own. Sometimes they would try to run them back thru with another batch of cars. I used to mark the undersides of the radiator supports with yellow grease pencil on rejected cars, then use a mirror on a stick looking for my grease pencil marks to come back through the second time so I could reject them again.

He likely bought a rejected car that the rental fleet had to eat.

So the moral of the story is never buy a vehicle direct from a major rental car company.

please stop the hate towards people that may have a different perspective and valuation system than you do. We get it already, you personally consider anything over suggested retail price to be a rip off. Not everyone agrees with you and it doesn't make either position more valid than the other.

You see that ignore button? Use it. You don't get to tell me to stop expressing anything. I don't care what you think a Maverick is worth or if you're stupid enough to pay it, which many seem to be. But I know what Ford thinks its worth, and it is extremely obvious what price point Ford had in mind while building it. So I'll keep discouraging people from throwing absurd money at a budget vehicle.

What really grinds my gears is seeing dealers that have gamed the system, and are selling USED Mavericks with like 15 miles for 10K plus over MSRP. Seems highly likely some of these dealers had employees and/or family members order new Mavericks, then immediately sell them right back to the dealer so they could mark them up and make a substantial profit under the radar of Ford's corporate gaze. (Something to be aware of @Ford Motor Company, not that I expect anything is really going to change in the near future.)

Crestview Ford in Florida is doing that very thing right now with both a Maverick XLT ($11.6K markup), a Mustang Mach-e GT ($16.5k markup), a Bronco Wildtrack ($17k markup), and a F-250 Lariat ($25.4k markup). All have less than 100 miles on the odometer according to the website listing, in most cases, less than 20 miles, yet they are listed as USED.

As so many real customers are waiting on their orders to be built by Ford, it is utter BS that dealers are getting away with these actions that are taking production capacity away from paying customers that have been patiently waiting for many months, in some cases more than a year.

I love my Maverick. I love the Mustang Mach-e. I love the 750% profit I made on Ford stock back during the recession. I love that Ford did not accept bailout money during that time. But the greedy actions of dealers with their unspoken ADMs (until the last minute) and excessive Doc Fees ($995 in some cases) is really souring me on the Ford brand lately. Luckily though there is no other brand with a lineup that can compare to the Maverick AND Mach-e.
BUYERS make value. No Buyers = No Value. If several buyers offered you $100K for yur Maverick, would you force them to pay less ?

I thought a dealer near me was doing this when their $26k window sticker was listed at $37k. Turns out it was actually used and had 15k miles.
