I think this issue should be handled just like the dropping of packages to speed up production email that was sent out by Ford a week or so ago. Dealerships should be required to call their customers to ask them if they are interested in taking delivery of a new Ford Maverick that is missing some of the chips. I would be a strong "no" on doing this but my current 2019 Ford F150 is running fine and the Maverick is a want for me, not a need. At this point, if I was asked I would gladly switch to MY2023 if necessary.
I'd be OK with this idea, but I don't want my order partially built and told to come back later for the rest. Like you, my current vehicles are running fine and the Maverick is just a want.

I have a feeling there may be some de-contenting for 2023. The truck I ordered is exactly what I want, and if they changed anything about it for MY23.. I'd be out.

Interesting times. I thought 2022 would be the catch up year in automotive. Now I'm not even sure 2023 will be.

I would take my Xlt lux hybrid as ordered missing components knowing I would get them later. Dealer suggested I drop down to XLT but honestly I would go down to XL. I want the options in Lux package. Plain XLT not more appealing then XL.

At this rate I'm not sure how ford will complete with the Chinese EV companies. There ramping up, gas prices are high and if not 2022 mav ill be looking for an EV ride. And I really want a Maverick.

Amen! WTF is up with people liking this idea? Have they never dealt with dealer service? That's just what I think of when I think of a good time.. counting how many things the technicians broke while "fixing" something else.

No no no no. This is a terrible plan and I can't believe anyone would be desperate enough to buy an unfinished car.
GM has been doing this for a few months . Its seems to be a good option for now. It should help elevate the constraint bottleneck.

This is a great option for Ford (here’s most of your truck, please sign here) and not the worst option for those folks that need this truck ASAP.
I too think this should be offered as an option if Ford goes this way. I’m very curious to see what the percentage of takers would be without any additional incentives (other than getting the truck sooner).

Hum, well my son in law recently purchased a new full size AT4 trim GMC truck. It had several features where the chips were missing and the window sticker showed a $50.00 credit for each. Dealer told him he could Pay the service dept to add the chips for each of the features when they ever become available and the dealer had the chips in stock. I told him you can bet your sweet ass the they will charge him a heck of a lot more than the $50.00 credits to purchase the parts and pay for the labor to install them and that he got screwed

50 dollars 😂

where is the incentive for gm to make good?

Service center:

sir your chips came in, that will be 4,394 dollars to have them installed, we have to remove the dash and the bed in order to get to them 😂

Exactly, and to add to it he will have to take off work to take it back to the dealer, wait on them to do the work or get someone to pick him up or get a rental. Just a pain in the ass situation

Sounds like innovative Henry Ford type
"Let's get these Model T's moving NOW!!" type of action.

There is little chance I get a MY22 with my late order. I am at the very back of the line and would not mind moving over to the express lane for non critical chips. Sounds like a few front of the line people here are totally against it anyway. I can buy the chips on ebay for $1 each, later when the dust settles, haha.
Although,
Does anyone know exactly how they would add a chip?
Do they use a soldering iron on a circuit board or is it just plug and play with a module?
Super easy, or harder?

I disagree, regardless of who else does it. If Ford does not have the parts to build the cars, then don't build the cars. If they are concerned about angry customers now, wait until a bunch of people have to rely on dealers to complete their vehicles.

Also, I don't see how it is possible to need a Maverick so bad that you'd accept an incomplete unit. There are plenty of other (complete) vehicle options out there. Brand new cars are a "want" item. Humans are a weird bunch.. All it takes is being denied instant gratification and all of a sudden people are willing to accept huge markups, drop items they wanted from their build, and now even happy to have unfinished builds.

Add a zero to that $50 and it might be interesting
