My military appreciation rebate is NOT included in the MSRP. I am getting that $500 dollars off.

Are you active duty? Do you have any interactions with the local bases? I would contact public affairs on Randolph/Lackland AFB and/or Ft. Sam and let them know how Red treats veterans in San Antonio.

Turn up the heat!
I am AD and a pretty senior officer. I can guarantee you that my unit's local PA would not give two craps about this.

Yes that does help. It's true you do not have a signed buyers order like @hhnvubu has but this is still leverage.

First, never ever ever get emotionally involved in a price negotiation. It's just business. If you show your emotions or start going crazy and get all fired up and complain you are just giving them more leverage. They want you to walk away so they can keep this package added and jack up the MSRP on the next guy.

Now, consider where you have leverage. You dealer has leverage in that they are holding the vehicle and they have peopled lined up that would bay this bogus $2,500 plus even more! I agree they are in a strong position here but you have leverage to use as well as some negotiating "tricks". You have leverage in that they want a sale from you (since they have already devoted time to you) and they want your repeat business. You also have leverage in the fact that you can spread negative reviews about them. I would negotiate with the following steps (in this order order)

1. Ask to speak with their manager. Their manager is the decision maker of saying yes or no on these bs added packages. Don't go through your sales rep, go to the big boss.

2. I really do not see the value in this "Texas Protection Package", thanks but no thanks. If they say it's their policy to add this to all vehicles tell them that policy doesn't work for you and they should change their policy. Make this mark up their problem not yours.

3. I am confused, when we put in the order this package was not added. Why is it being added now? Everything laid out on this order sheet is what I wanted added, nothing else. No one told me this was a thing and this seems unfair and shady.

4. I know that dealerships make the most of their money in service, repeat service, for the life of the vehicle. I was planning on bringing my vehicle back in here for service but to be honest I will take my service business elsewhere if you don't remove this protection package.

5. I had set my budget at the price on the order sheet. Unfortunately this added package is a problem for me. Can you remove the protection package?

6. I need to discuss this with my wife, she is the one that has the final say in all this, I am just the messenger. I will need to come back next weekend with a final answer.

6. Dealer XYZ down the street has told me they do not add extra packages. I might have to transfer my order to them.

7. (This is where you "fall down in front of them". Imagine someone trips on their face. You would feel bad for them and rush over to help. You are going to "fall down" so they "feel bad"). I don't see why you all are adding this package when I do not want it. I was so excited for this vehicle and this is really ruining the whole experience. Now I am dealing with all this stress and back and forth trying to finalize this price when we already had an order sheet with the price. Is this how you treat all your customers? I'm not having a great experience here.

8. If they still wont budge you need to at least see if they will lower the price. You have already pointed out that these items add up to waaaaay less than what they are charging. Ask if they can meet you in the middle. Tell them that paying $1,000 for the package is your best and final offer. It's all you can squeeze out of your budget.

9. If none of the above works then you can either walk away or pay the fee. This negotiation will take some time but just think about how much money you make per hour at your job and look at $2,500 (plus even more if this is being added to a loan and that $2,500 will have interest applied to it over the life of the loan) in terms of hours you would need to work. I'm willing to bet you're ok with spending a day negotiating to try and save $2,500.

Good luck! Remember, in the end you can just accept and pay and you wont have to wait a year for another Maverick. But you should at least make a big attempt to get them to remove it.
This is golden advice. I wish I could sticky this. I will be running through this playbook soon.

This is a Maverick reserved in my name. I would love it if you could come and help me negotiate!!! Red McCombs told me they will not sell me the car if without the "Texas Protection package" So I'm open to ideas on how to push back.
Go on thier web site reviews and let them have it.

I like that idea. I'll definitely try that.

Btw, they are claiming that my Military Appreciation discount is already a reduction towards the required package!
Absolutely not. The military rebate ($500) is paid for by Ford. I would be furious. Best to keep your cool 😎 though and tkae charge like a boss

Edit- they basically have all the cards so losing your cool is a quick way to fold out of the game.

I'm not at all emotional by this. Red McCombs feels like I'm talking to a wall. Whatever I say the terms don't change and im starting to wonder if all this trouble is worth having to look for another maverick or wait for another hybrid reservation cycle.

They told me the same thing. They are arguing that the Texas Protection Package is not a markup but protective measures they put all on all new vehicles. There for it does not violate their initial hand shake agreement of no dealership markup.

They are extra sketchy.
Tell them you appreciate that they care to protect their clients vehicles, however, you do not want this protection. You understand vehicles wear out and it's great they they care to try and protect them but you're ok with less protection. It's not their vehicle to protect, it's yours.

Your "hand shake agreement" is not an agreement. While the salesman was shaking your hand, he was stabbing you in the back with the other. He knew it and was giving you his fake smile while doing so.

You're welcome. It never hurts to try. I wish I could explain all of the negotiation "tricks and tactics" behind my responses but that would take way too much time.

Remember, NEVER GET EMOTIONAL OR UPSET. Always play dumb, keep an even calm, tone, be normal and nice. Be like if you were talking to/paying the check out clerk at the grocery store.

Just thought I would share this with the Texas Maverick community.

My vehicle is scheduled to arrive later this month so I went to the dealership to prep paperwork. While I was looking at the price sheet there was a $2,500 "Texas Protection Package" that included paint/leather protection (no exact details on what they are doing to provide protection), vin etching, and window tints.

I pointed out that these things individually don't even add up to $2,500 and my sales man said "this is pretty much a non negotiable for all cars from this dealership, if you had bought this ford as an inventory item we would be charging a much much higher mark up"

Given that I've already been truck-less and waiting for such a long time for the Maverick to arrive, I feel forced to eat this $2,500 markup.

I hope that this will inform others to find a different dealer that isn't going to be predatory on prices given the current state of the supply chain.
Call Ford! Now! These are the kind of dealers Ford doesn’t like. Ford just warned all dealers about unsavory practices regarding the Lightning. This sounds like similar BS.

I wouldn't want any of that stuff on my car regardless, so I would be super annoyed.

I don't need my Maverick, I want it. Luckily I have a fantastic dealer.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Try to hit some of the suggestions given here. Don't destroy them in reviews until a final resolution happens though.

It's not so easy getting in touch with Ford but I did reach out to them over email and twitter. Will keep you all posted. Hopefully my post will get people to avoid the dealership for now.

The first time I went to buy a new car I was about 26. My Dad told me one thing, no matter how good a deal you think they are offering, NEVER sign anything or agree to anything the first time you go to a dealer. So I stop at a place looking at a Nissan Sentra, about 1988 or so. I never really understood financing, but he starts writing down all kinds of numbers on a sheet of paper and even though I had decided I really wanted the car, the monthly payments were too high for my budget. All of a sudden, he comes up with much lower figures for the monthly payment. He says he was able to do this if I took a second loan out that would allow me to make a higher down payment. Sounded ok to me, but I knew not to sign anything and told the guy I just wanted to talk to my Dad first. My Dad shook his head and said he couldn’t believe dealers were still trying to pull this. He called it a bridge loan which he said was popular in the 1950s and would have ended up with me paying wayyy more than the original price of the car. I ended up buying the same car for a lower price at another dealer. —Not to tell you what to do, but if you have any alternatives for transportation, don’t give in to this sleazy dealer. As someone else said, think of how many hours you will have to work for that $2,500 plus interest for something you don’t want, didn’t agree to, and that costs them nickels.

Sorry this has happened to you.

There have been numerous warnings here on this site that dealers can add charges to the final bill unless you had a "Buyer's Order" done that listed all fees/charges with a final total out-the-door cost agreed by and signed by the buyer and the general/sales manager.

Tim @fordvideoguy has stated in his videos about this problem of additional charges on delivery and to get a "Buyer's Order" done to protect yourself from unscrupulous dealers.

On my Maverick I had a "Buyer's Order" done with everything listed and had no surprises when paying for my Maverick on delivery.

Any other documentation like a DORA signed by only the buyer or any document without a final out-the-door price not listed is not a valid contract.

As seen below on both the "Buyer's Order" and the original DORA my cost was $24,173.85 for my Maverick with the total out-the-door cost of $26,068.21 after $150 Doc Fee, Sales Tax and other mandatory legitimate state fees.

The agreed upon price of $26,068.21 is exactly what I paid.

I strongly recommend that anyone here either ordering a Maverick or has one on order to have a signed "Buyer's Order" done that lists all fees/charges with a final total out-the-door cost agreed by and signed by the buyer and the general/sales manager for protection from surprise costs at time of delivery.

You certainly are 100% correct on everything you said. I wonder why the shift in Ford's policy - I have custom ordered many work trucks for my company and every time there was a purchase order, a total and a deposit.

When I went in to order my someday Maverick .... I asked about a PO and deposit ( I was happy to give one ) and was told no, this is the process for Maverick all we want is a DL and signature. I do locksmith work for this dealership and hopefully they don't try and screw me when it finally comes in. The question is WHY arent dealers pushing that option as a deposit means more money for them earlier and who decided this procedure ?

I offered much more than my $100 deposit, but they told me no. It's confusing.

BTW - what is a "Road and Bridge " charge - that too sounds slimy from a different source .... ;)
