You used a screw driver to pry off the cover over the air bag?
Yes a flathead, but dont really pry it out too much, just push it straight up more than pry

The key is with changing the steering wheel mounts or even the steering wheel is those controls and steering wheels in the Maverick are essentially the same as the ones in the other c2 ford’s, such as the bronco sport and the escape. Junk yards probably will not work because those other vehicles are too new, but you can find them on ford retailer and ford parts pages

So everything electronic that happens on the steering wheel sends communication through the clockspring. If you're trying to add features (and thus buttons) to your steering wheel, you'll need to make sure there's the relevant interface on the clockspring that can send that along to the computer - in this case for ACC, a clockspring from an ACC-equipped Maverick would avoid having an incompatibility due to features the Escape has that the Maverick cannot have.

Essentially, you want a clockspring that will do everything your switches are designed to do, and nothing more, otherwise you run the risk of error codes, incompatibility, etc
I would have expected that everything was going over CAN bus. That would give a single ’interface’ type.; thus one clockspring.

Non of the salvage yards around here had an escape that fit the guidelines. I was able to get in touch with one of the ones listed on that site and have a steering wheel on order. Now just to get the truck eventually. At least by that time, all of the tutorials and tinkering will be proven and I'll have an easy time getting things done.
Based on my ’20 Escape SEL, you want a wheel from one in SEL trim that doesn’t have the extra co-pilot assist package. Titanium trim comes with the extra co-pilot assist package.
I ordered my Escape, didn’t feel the need to pay the extra $900. I do recall a lot of the SEL dealer stock had the extra co-pilot, so that might be why they are hard to find.

Looked at the ‘20 Escape order guide, the base S trim comes with cruise. So looks like S or SE trim can get what you want.

SE is leather, S is not.

SEL is heated, SE and S are not.

Cruise control itself is only the switch and the forscan programming to get it working
I believe this is correct, the XL clockspring should in theory be the same across the XL and XLT at least
So necessary wiring in the wheel is already in place? Would be nice since the switch module can be had for <$60. Local dealer price is probably <$100.
Are you sure it's that expensive? I was looking at the switch with CC from a bronco sport and thought they were under $30 each (I believe you'd need both left and right switch panels to maintain overall functionality).

You can absolutely find the correct steering wheel in a junkyard, I did. Cars get wrecked all the time, even new cars unfortunately (or fortunately for us). Doesn't matter if the airbag has deployed since you're swapping your Maverick's airbag over from the vinyl wheel.

So, do I understand that only the left switch needs to be changed? If so, is the part number LJ6Z9C888AB? That is the left switch for the 2021 Escape SE. (edit: corrected switch position.)

I understand programming is required, I'm just trying to figure out the correct minimum parts to purchase.

I just want to inform all involved purchasing switches only - if you're putting these switches into your XL, you need left and right clusters. They move elements around on the clusters when they took the cruise out, so you will end up with buttons on both sides that do the same thing, and completely missing buttons elsewhere. I'm at work now otherwise I'd take photos of both wheels to show you what I mean.

So the clock spring is connected to the stalks, so if you want adaptive cruise, you need a clock spring with the stalk. It may be removable not sure. However, the only difference in the clock spring I can see, is the bottom connector for the heated wheel. My XL has the spot for it, and my explorer wheel clicks into it, But theres no pins.

Ford Maverick Factory cruise control enabled on XL with Forscan and Escape steering wheel PXL_20220107_160504886

I was wondering about that... I'm about to test it actually.

Does anyone have a PN for the right (side) switch cluster? I am assuming still that my left side PN SW8579 is correct, anyone know otherwise?
