Not to start a panic or anything but with the escalation of catalytic converter thefts and their relative ease of access on the Maverick, should we be worried? I have read that Hybrids are specifically sought out by thieves, due to their higher concentration of rare elements. Can someone identify where on the vehicle the catalyst converters are? Can we do anything to make this less of an issue? Living in an urban area, I fear this is gong to be an issue, since the Maverick is higher off the ground, than any other hybrid, making it easier to steal.

Prius and their hybrid ilk are targeted by catalytic converter thieves due to less engine run time and fouling of the rare elements within the converters. I’m sure the aftermarket ones will come up with a cover/shield to help prevent theft. Like anything else. If thieves want they will get it. The best counter is to have something to deter the theft .

That, and a low deductible on your insurance.

I know a guy who welded a cage around his cat after having to replace it due to theft. The thieves slashed his tires instead.

My fear is that if the mav becomes popular with the modding crowd, they will get targeted for theft to be parted out in chop shops.

And at 25 seconds on this video you get a quick glimpse of what thieves would see if they got the cover off the bottom of the engine:

1.) cut it off
2.) get a sticker that shows it’s being tracked
3.) give no care because you have car insurance

The cat seems hard to get to but the exhaust coolant heat exchanger is out in the open and those get stolen off of the Priuses with the cat. Tweekers aren't the smartest so if that gets cut you're not driving your mav anywhere until it's fixed.

You could just choose not to stress over events that are extremely unlikely to happen to you - and that you're insured for if it does.

No. I don't think I've ever even met anyone who's had a catalytic converter stolen.
