I’ve lived on the East Coast of Canada for 25 years now, and somehow haven’t made the effort to visit Newfoundland until recently. The plan for this trip was for me to drive up and take the Marine Atlantic Ferry from North Sydney NS to Port Aux Basques NL. After a night of solo camping my wife flew in to Deer Lake, and we spent 4 days in absolute awe of the scenery. We stayed in Gros Morne, did the Western Brook Pond Tour, we hiked the Tablelands, and we went on tour to find icebergs. We also ante the local cuisine, and while the local selection of fruits and veggies was lacking, the lobster rolls, cod, scrunchions, moose, and toutons more than made up for it. After an amazing few days I dropped my wife back at the airport, then I headed back to Gros Morne for some camping and fishing time. I stayed at Green Gardens Campground for a few nights, then Lomond Campground for a couple days. I travelled north to see wild caribou in Port Aux Choix, I fished Bonne Bay for Sea Run brook trout, I fished a few ponds for very coloured up brook trout, and I spent a couple days with the fly rod on some gorgeous rivers chasing wild Atlantic salmon. Everywhere I went was just stunning scenery and the friendliest locals you are ever going to find.

My travel and camping setup was a homemade camper shell (built from a stepside S10 cap) with a bed platform and a 3” foam mattress. I’m only 5’6” so I can just fit by sleeping on an angle across the bed. And I slept like a baby in there every night. Even when the coyotes were howling outside the campground. Camping gear was stored under the bed platform and in the back seat, and I had tons of room for all my stuff, including plenty of Newfoundland souvenirs. Over our 10 day trip I travelled nearly 3000kms (1800 miles) and got gas mileage of 8.4L/100km (28mpg) with a full load of gear in the truck. We had an amazing experience in Newfoundland and feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to visit such an amazing province.

Oh man, such a treat! Was there for two weeks in 1998, a worth while trip for anyone! Glad you enjoyed your trip!
Good day

I have to say the same thing about Nfld...we visited a couple years ago with our Hymer camper van and absolutely loved it...we were there 17 days, a retired military couple we worked with while we were all in the mob met us in Deer Lake, once we got off the ferry...gotta visit all the points you mentioned, the viking mounds were awesome to see! Gros Morne National Park (and inland fjord with towering roots of old mountains) visit was the best possible weather...very rare we heard.

We took back roads, visited breweries like the Bumblebee Bight Inn (on Pilley's Island) and brewery, Leading Tickles, and of course, If you like seeing Lord Of The Rings seascapes, Dungeon Provincial Park close to Bonavista, visiting the beautiful Lumsden Beach and look for sea glass ...so many places and we need to go back and plan for more time. There is so much more to see and wonderful people to meet.

Don't forget, if you want to see icebergs floating by...at the right time of year...do your research!

Gotta go look at some holiday snaps now.

Andy

Three years ago this is when I my truck and is its first trip was to Newfoundland where we buried my father in law in Dildo where the family home is. My husband drove it there and he picked up my daughter, her husband and I there at the airport. He drove it all the way from Mississauga, Ontario.

Spent close to a week there back in the early 90's. Ferried over from Goose Bay Labrador after driving north from Baie Comeau Quebec to western Labrador then across to Goose Bay. Back then I had a Bronco II. Did have to load it on a train to get from Labrador City to Escort then unload to continue by vehicle. Road was being build, but was not done. Loved both areas, but the black flies in Labrador would cart you away... Surprisingly not so in Newfoundland. Loved the province, would like to go back.

I did the East coast with my Beagle Duggy. Didn't have time for NFLD as it was expensive enough pulling a trailer. Here is Duggy in PEI.

Wife and I toured Nova Scotia by motorcycle ten years ago. Was curious about Newfoundland but never made it there. Looking at Google Maps back then didn't show any roads there??
Thanks for the great pictures.

Good day

We are going back to NS and following the coastline around the whole province this summer in our camper van..."by-ways, not high-ways tour".

Then visiting a couple children who live in Dartmouth when we get there.

Things have changed as time has passed. I have no idea of how good the Labrador gravel roads are, especially for 2 wheeled methods of conveyance.

As always, do your research as to travel, and the summer is still young.

😀

Thanks for the info. The past few years have been showing my age; we've given up the motorcycle riding, and even walking is hard now. We're thankful that we were able to tour all 48 states and many provinces since retiring, but that is past now. Life has been great!

Yes, my motorcycle, canoeing and rough camping days are over as well.

That is why we have a camper van, so we can still go coast to coast so as to visit our children and family.

Life has been great and continues to be as good as we can make it.

Take care,

Andy
