Do y'all just leave a hitch in all the time? Someone told me that it can help with low speed rear end accidents; they hit the hitch instead of your bumper.

What is the best kind of "generic" hitch to get? If I'm going to get one to leave in there, I'd want the most commonly used size.

Thanks in advance!

I can tell you in trucks that are body on frame it can take a small accident and turn it into a totaling. It can bend the dram easier using the hitch for more leverage

I would put a lock on it. Have heard of some instances of someone walking through a parking and hitting their leg because how hitch extended. Seems the hitch then ends up through your back window.
Not Me !! Just a heads up.

So, your advice is no hitch, right?

I plan on keeping it in the under seat storage, or behind the rear seat if there is room.

I did't say that, I put my hitch on my F150 do what I gotta do then remove it.

If you plan on leaving it in all the time.
I just suggested to use a key lock on the hitch. The one I have is adjustable height and ball size new about $140.00 which I why I take it out when done.

I personally feel messing with someones vehicle is a douch move.

I have had the ball on my tow vehicle for two years without a lock without issues. Even had my cat stolen and they cared less about the hitch/ball. I wont be leaving one on the maverick but its not my tow vehicle.

Never heard of or had issue running into someone hitch, maybe cause i been social distancing vehicles before it was the cool thing to do... And i know my surrounding before backing a vehicle..

We had a trailer hitch on our old van, I hadn't intended to leave the ball on it the time but didn't take it off one time for a few days/week. Too long ago to recall and to be honest it wasn't planned but longer story much shorter, it rusted solid. I suspect that if I really, really, needed to get it off I could but it never left that van after that.

I plan to use my bumpstep from weathertech, whenever I'm not towing anything.
I was going to do the same thing. But I measured out the fit and it would partly cover your license plate. Might not be a problem, but Im not gonna give the police ANY visible excuse for them to pull me over!

If you're gonna leave one in at least have the courtesy of putting a bright colored ball cover on it so it stands out in a parking lot at night. Nothing like seeing someone clip one in poor visibility.

no I can’t say either way. I typically leave mine in. I can’t say in a unibody. I just jot witha Frame it’s an issue
Your point of hitting a hitch and how it focuses the energy into a smaller area would apply in either application.
