Thanks for sharing the video Troy! Quite a bit of metal in there.

Doing my second transmission drain & fill soon (probably next week) as my FX4 is about to cross 50k miles. Also doing the second drain & fill of the PTU and RDU too. I'm interested to see how all of my fluids look!

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to post my experience with doing a drain & refill on my LOBO, the results were a bit surprising.

I'd highly recommend changing the fluid no later than 10K to get the break-in metals out of the transmission, I've posted videos here about my PTU and RDU which both had metal in them as well. If you want to keep your Maverick longer than the Warranty Period keep up on your fluid changes.

My Maintenance so far on the Maverick:

500 miles - Break-in oil change done, metal found but not excessive, had fuel smell to the oil.

2000 Miles - Oil change done, less metal found oil was a bit darker than the 500 mile oil change but still clean. No Fuel smell noted.

5000 Miles - Engine Oil change done, PTU & RDU Drain & Refill - Found Metal in both PTU & RDU, slightly less metal in the engine oil at 2,000 miles, no fuel smell.

10,0000 Miles - Engine oil change done, NO METAL in the engine oil! Transmission drain & refilled, metal observed, trans fluid was dark.

I plan to do another Transmission, PTU & RDU service at 30K and change my oil every 5K from then on, just curious on what you all do here?

Thanks!

Troy.
Everyone is different troy.i did my first and subsequent oil change on our 23 mav at 5k, as per factory recommendation. Will be doing the trans fluid change at 100k, as per factory recommendation. Do what makes you feel good! Just under 50k trouble free miles so far.

Better yet, do what's best for your vehicle. Don't base your scheduled maintenance on feelings.

How many quarts did you use for the drain and fill of the transmission?

For a standard drain and fill on the 8F35 transmission, you will typically get between 4.2 to 4.5 quarts out.

However, you should buy 5 quarts of Mercon ULV to make sure you have enough to complete the job and clear the overflow leveling plug.

For someone who does his own drain & fills, I think you're following safe intervals. I use the same intervals based on oil analysis results and the opinions of techs who rebuild 8F35s.

I was at my dealer yesterday to pick up the ULV and PTU/RDU fluids. He said luckily "you got here just after we stocked up" He went on to say the the issues with the straight of Hormuz blah blah... And said the chemical/blend we use for ULV comes from Iran area. He says there is a shortage and its hit or miss finding it. I used to see it on Rock auto all the time, now its hit or miss. SOme dealers cannot get it and some have a long wait time if ordered.

May be some truth to it, but either way I picked up 12 quarts and 2 of each for the RDU/PTU.

I felt like the people hording toilet paper, but I guess im good for another 60K

Right there with you. I have 3 5-quart bottles of ULV and 2 each of PTU and RDU oil I bought from Rock Auto last year. I figure that will pretty much get me through my ownership of the truck. This is the first vehicle I've ever owned that has pushed me to keep transmission fluid in stock.

EDIT: QUART not gallon LOL

I wish I could have got the rock auto prices. Dealer was $8 per ULV quart and the RDU was $45. Sheesh... Still more budget friendly than a clogged filter.

A recent shortage of Ultra-Low Viscosity (ULV) transmission fluids (like Motorcraft Mercon ULV and GM Dexron ULV) has caused backorders and delivery delays for many dealerships and service centers across the US. The shortage is largely driven by supply chain constraints and an ongoing industry-wide scarcity of the Group III base oils required to formulate full-synthetic ULV fluids. [1, 2, 3, 4]
