Cops can’t tell it’s a detector for me when it’s under the mirror. Same as a dash cam
IDK how often this happens, but cops will sometimes shoot a group of speeding cars from behind to see if any drivers immediately hit their brakes, in order to decide who to pull over.

I don’t think that’s how they work it and if a cop has gotten behind me close enough and long enough pace me before using the instant on technique and I didn’t see them? Well I earned that ticket.

It’s a radar detector. It’s an aid. Not a guarantee you won’t get a ticket or that it will alert for every threat with enough notice.

But is definitely is not making me more of a target to officers conducting speed enforcement.

In fact my buddy got pulled over in his FL5 pushing 80 out of a turn in a 55 and a bike officer waved him down from the shoulder.

We pulled over. He joked that my buddies R7 couldn’t help him when he wasn’t gunning. Wrote him a warning and told him to be safe.

I have used a Valentine One since 2005, it is expensive but it will alert front and rear up to 2 miles depending on terrain, it also shows you if the signal is to the front or rear or either side. They’re still in business, you can get repair parts or send it in to have it repaired or upgraded if radars change. But remember they are starting to use drones, like they used planes in the past.
Yep! Gotta use JBV1 on an Android phone! ;)

Yeah, if a driver is by themself, they're getting lit up.

The scenario I referred to is when it's a group of drivers speeding (which is fairly common) and the cop is deciding who to write up, they may turn on their radar to see who hits their brakes and give them the award.

As I said somewhere above, I'm a retired lead foot. I used to drive ~25-30,000+ miles per year. Over 750,000 miles total. I've owned a bunch of detectors and a few jammers. I also used scanners and a CB. When I had my record printed out at the MVA a few years ago, it was 9 pages long. No DWIs; racing; fleeing and eluding; or at-fault accidents. All speeding tickets.

When the speed limit was 55 mph, it was hard not to speed. My feeling was, if you're gonna drive over (say) 63-65 -- you might as well run 75-80 because the ticket was 2 points vs 1. 85+ was a 5 point ticket so I stayed below that.

These days, the limit is mostly 70 mph and people drive the way I used to and don't get bothered. I want my money back!

I rarely drive anymore and truly don't care what people do, as long as they do not hurt others. Detectors can be helpful, they'll save your butt sometimes but anyone who routinely speeds will get caught -- regardless of the devices they have. The only way to avoid getting any tickets is to have a 'cloaking device' (Star Trek).

There are some cops like that. I've gotten my share of warnings, some for the same (80/55). I've also received tickets for 61 and 62 in a 55.

It's a crap shoot.

A cop pulled me over one night for 80+/55. I thought for sure I was getting a ticket. We were talking a bit and I mentioned that I worked for Metro (the subway system) and he said, "I like Metro. They let me ride for free..." and he let me go with a warning. Go figure.

I have other similar stories, but for every one of those there were several that did not go so well.

They also use radar detector detectors. And I believe the only radar detector that cannot be truly detected by a radar detector Detector is the Valentine V1.

Valentine can be detected. Escort Redline 360c Max is supposed to be undetectable.

But only in VA do they use radar detector detectors because it is illegal. It would not serve law enforcement any other purpose elsewhere.

I haven't been 'in the game' for several years, but I definitely recall that radar detector detectors were in use in states like VA (just to our south) where detectors were (are?) illegal. Most Marylanders would unplug and stash detectors in VA.

The best way to avoid tickets is to not make a spectacle of yourself. Don't be the fastest car on the road. Don't spend a lot of time in lane 1. Go with the flow.

If the speed limit had been 70-80 mph (vs 55) for the entire time I was driving a lot, I would have been written up very little. Here in MD, I-70 is posted at 70 mph (except urban areas). From what I've seen (and read) the average speed is about 80. I might want to drive faster dep on conditions, but 80 is at least reasonable -- not mind-numbingly boring like 55.

That being the case, there's less of a need for detectors.

I think that may be backwards unless something changed since the last time I looked at vortex radars test. I believe he said it’s the magnesium case on the V1 that works against the radar detector detectors most of the other detectors use a plastic case. 🤔

What I've heard from LEOs is that some of them have an attitude when it comes to detectors, and esp jammers. Their thinking is that it's one thing to inadvertently speed occasionally, but it's something else entirely to spend hundreds of dollars on a device that has the sole purpose of helping the driver break the law (never mind that most cops routinely run well over the limit).

IOW, it's premeditated behavior. So a cop with a chip on their shoulder could use a radar detector detector to locate the 'scofflaws' and single them out for special attention.

I’ve had the complete opposite experience and never met LEO with a detector detector because I don’t live in VA and they don’t use them in other states.

Not trying to be argumentative, but it's impossible for any of us to know every piece of equipment a cop does or does not have.

It does stand to reason that at least some cops take a very dim view of any detectors/scanners/ jammers -- anything used to premeditatedly break the law.

Personally, I never let that bother me. I used a wide assortment of devices over the years. I'm just passing on what I've read and been told directly by LEOs.

I'm sure many others do not care. After all, detectors are legal almost everywhere, and any experienced cop can easily beat a detector.
