All this speculation.

OP, tell us what your dealer said.
I didn't take it to the dealership. I know they would say they can't do anything as the truck isn't having the issue right now and I don't know how to make it happen, I know it from the nightmare it was to get my factory defective flooded-cell battery replaced with the AGM and when I had the transmission replaced.

My reason for posting this thread is to have a record this can happen, in case it happens to me or someone else in the future.

I drive with auto stop-start activated, but it was not triggering due to tbe stop and go traffic. For the flooded engine, not the answer as the engine ran fine in park and neutral and would only lug in drive.
Thanks - dumb guess on my part.

But one would hope a qualified ASE certified tech/mech could diagnose based on symptoms alone. Even an AI tech/mech offers tests to pinpoint the problem (without the $$$ of ASE time).

Anyway, I appreciate the heads up. My power train is still new - but it will get old someday too. After warranty grrr.

Make sure to change the fluids in your transmission, PTU and RDU every 30,000 miles at most, especially if yours is not an FX4 with the transmission cooler, since we don't have a dipstick to check if it is burned. As far as the techs could tell, my transmission failed because of prematurely broken down fluid. I was saved by the extended warranty, as it went out 1,200 miles after the factory warranty expired.

Watch out for unexplained clunks coming from the rear of the truck, it could be a telltale sign the RDU (rear differential) needs a fluid change. Mine did the clunk and it went away with fresh fluid.

Today my '22 ecoboost stalled out of nowhere in the middle of traffic after releasing the brake. I got a message on the dashboard to shift into park to be able to start the enginge again. I noticed that when I shifted into drive, the engine would lug and stall over the course of about 4 seconds. I tried low range but that made no difference. It stalled on me 3 more times until I reved up to 3500 rpm and then shifted into drive in order to be able to move again.

After that incident my truck didn't stall again.

Maybe the torque converter clutch locked up? Who knows, I couldn't find a thread describing what I went through.

It has been about 20,000 km, 12,000 miles, since my transmission and torque converted where replaced under warranty. I also had my PTU and RDU flushed and filled with fresh fluid. I don't tow, I never load more than half of the maximum payload, I drive occasionally on dirt roads.

I hope this isn't a sign of more problems to come.
So I owned a Focus ST back in the day and had this EXACT issue. I replaced the thermostat and it never happend again. I know the egines are different but when I read your description I had a flashback - I was pulling out going up a hill while a semi truck some ways back was coming down the hill behind. Anyway - what was the coolant temp at ? If the thermostat sticks (when was last coolant change) then egine will go into save-me mode.

It was in the normal range, I can't quite remember precisely as I didn't think to look at it but it wasn't in the red. I doubt it wouid be a similar problem as it still wouldn't explain the engine running normally in park and neutral, but boghing down as soon as I shifted to drive.

Try not using that damn electric brake. Maybe it's sticking.

Pancho - Has your Maverick been fed Top Tier gas all along - as Ford says?

If not, maybe put a bottle of Techron Fuel System Cleaner at next fill up?

That said, I used a 6 year old bottle of Techron recently in my new Lobo instead of tossing it. I noticed some jerkiness in acceleration that I never experienced when using Techron in other vehicles. Weird ECU reaction!

I'm Mexican, so there's no top tier gas to speak of. Engine wise, my mav has been happy with gas from the seediest middle-of-nowhere gas stations to the fanciest ones in affluent neighborhoods.

After decades of driving in my mile-high city in American and Japanese vehicles that run reliably with regular maintenance and never-ever caring about fuel quality (other than feeding high-octane to forced-induction vehicles) I don't believe in adding additives to my tank.

For the jerkiness you experienced, I would be way more likely to blame the transmission not knowing what gear to pick and/or easing the throttle response and clutch engagement to limit the torque experienced by the drivetrain, both well documented behaviors of our transmissions, rather than blame it on some ECU shenanigans with fuel delivery and spark timing. It is just a fact of life with a mav that sometimes the transmission will shift weird regardles of fuel and additives, and I should know, I'm on my second tranny.

I drive the Maverick Lobo and always shift it manually with the paddles. Loads of fun & the 7 speed “quick shift” transmission is always very crisp. I use 91 top tier every fill up too. I’m guessing the old opened bottle of Techron threw off my ECU not the TCU. Went back to normal after another fresh tank of 91 octane:)
