Noticed today that this bracket was just loosely installed. What is it for/should it be tightened up? There is not one on the driver side.

I think that is the anti-theft device, it makes it harder for someone to steal your tailgate.

They are made of metal, so I'm sure some get stolen. I doubt is a common thing though, I'm not buying the add-on.

Don't think that's the lock, they look like this...
it was a big problem before tailgates had locks. Remember it also has a camera in it.

Yes, quite common. Steal the tailgate, sell it to a bodyshop. They claim it's brand new but just paint it to match the car. Mad Cheddar Yo.

You have to let down the spare tire, pull the clip thing away from the frame that holds it in place and then you can disconnect the harness it wasn't too difficult.

Don't forget the Maverick owners/thieves that want a new tailgate to replace their damaged one.
I had the tailgate to my 1996 ram stolen twice within 6 months of buying it. Second time was on me since I didn't put a lock on the tailgate after the first time...duh! I'm pretty sure I know who stole my second one since he worked in the same industrial building area and followed me home?. His was crushed from a fifth wheel and was miraculously replaced.

You don't have to lower the spare to disconnect the camera harness. It's behind the opening under the bed near the bumper.
