Actually think Ford needs to look at their Dealerships and franchise requirements. Some require a 2.5 or 3.5% surcharge if using a credit card. So are you really getting those points if you are giving no paying more to cover a charge. Just for reference I no longer frequent that dealership. Just thought if someone is interested in it I highly advise you to check with your dealership first because they may require a surcharge on using a credit card

But if you use a different credit card you still have the surcharge and zero points.

Or if you drive to a further dealership to avoid a surcharge you're losing money in fuel.

Or if you use your credit card literally anywhere else you still get points. But who knows, maybe that restaurant has a surcharge too.

Lots to consider, or not.

No, not much to consider. The charge card company is offering points to the cardholder as bonus. It's not intended to go toward a company that is fleecing the consumer or the cardholder. Pretty simple. Also in this case Ford is putting a carrot out there but a dealership is making if fruitless.

I won't argue the point but I will make it plainer. If those using a credit card and willing to pay surcharges eventually all will be adding surcharges. Me I will take my business elsewhere. I don't like getting fleeced or robbed. I also appreciate a reputable business willing to accept credit charge knowing it's cash in the bank or guaranteed funds. No issue with bounced checks or funny.money counterfeit.

In MASS it is illegal to charge more to use a credit card with an exception... if it is the company processing the card transaction, not the dealer that is charging the fee, that is legal. Another thing that is strange with that law... You can offer a discount for cash, just can't charge more for usage of a card. hahahaha

Businesses pay a 2-3% fee for every dollar paid to them using a credit card.

I know this because I am the treasurer of our local baseball/softball/teeball league. This spring we have over 1,000 kids who have paid to play (so far), and all but 2 have paid using a credit card, which withholds 3% from all payments.

I take the cash discount where I can.

From what I gather it is becoming more common in SE Michigan, restaurants more than anything. That's another issue because restaurant owners have been constantly exploiting labor by a lower hourly wage if they can receive tips.

Not many that I know of up here in N Michigan and the few that do I don't frequent. It was a surprise to find out when I picked up my vehicle from service to see they added that surcharge. Since then they lost my business both service and new car sales, from that decision. Bought my Maverick elsewhere and have recalls and service elsewhere as well. Not much but at least a few thousand from myself and most likely I'm not alone. Pound foolish comes to mind when business decides to fleece customers.

Luckily I have 3 Ford Dealerships in the same proximity so it wasn't a concern. Just thought someone not having that luxury may want to check on it before finding out they may not be getting all them points

That is true because it's guaranteed funds. Similar to a process that is 2 or 3% to guarantee a check. Because of bounced checks and counterfeit money many businesses are happy to pay that for guaranteed funds. Not fleecing the cardholder from getting points from the financial institution.

Like I posted before it's mostly rampid right now in restaurants which they are use to slave labor and rely on tips to pay for a living wage. Just saying it's kind of expected with their history.

The fee is actually being charged by the PCI firm processing the charge. This is somehting that has been around for a long time - I know because I wrote PCI code for my company about three years ago.
Visa and other major credit card companies do not allow direct charge to their systems. Processing firms must all go thru a seriously tough audit by the credit card company before being allowed to access the credit card company systems. The last audit I went thru took three months before we received authorization.

I just stick with the cash back credit card which reduces the charge (3% surcharge - 2% cash back = 1% surcharge).

Ya I'm a computer geek and think about everything that way. Yes, I were glasses. :cwl:

A lot of businesses are charging extra for using a card, but I don't carry cash or a checkbook, so I pay it. They have to pay the rewards on cards, from what I heard, so I guess it's fair. I do get $1,000 a year back and pay off my card every month, so I come close to breaking even. Can you trust Ford to keep the card this time or will they cancel it again before you can cash in?

Yeah, nah! I signed up for the original, got things auto payed on it to get points, then vamoose! It’s gone and not a ford card anymore…had to switch things over to another card. I’m going to buy filters and differential fluid with the 30,000 points before they expire…

No, I get 2% in cash wherever I use the card, both from Fidelity and Navy Federal. No limits on how much.

Hmm. For years, I've bought everything everywhere with my Bass Pro Rewards Club Card, and enjoyed those points. I pay the balance every month, but always manage to charge $10,000 a year on it, which gives me the Silver card. Back before I retired, I charged all my business stuff and bought a lot of gas for my field service travel, so had the $25,000 a year Black card.

But I have to admit, I just don't need much new boat or tackle stuff these days. Perhaps I should switch to a Ford Rewards card now. I have a new Maverick, the dealership is four miles from my front door, I get all of my service done there, and they've always done price matching when I need tires. This thread has me thinking now......

But .... a carrot is not a fruit, so it already was fruitless!

You could have mentioned "tomato". In Arkansas it is both the state fruit and the state vegetable.

(Sorry, just had to!)

For those that want to skip the math, it's effectively 8% back on eligible ford services, 3% back at grocery, restaurants, and gas stations, 1% on everything else. $175 welcome bonus ($100 + $75 in points). I guess the question is without reading all the fine print, can you redeem rewards for statement credits? Actually not a bad no fee card category wise, even more so if you spend money at the dealer.

*edit, after reading the print, they are counting the 16x points on ford services as 6x (3%) from the card, and 10x from ford rewards membership.
