Did Ford recycle the "Maverick" name, assuming that only youngsters, who never saw the introduction of "Pony Cars"

would be buying it? I have to admit that the attached 1969 rollout ad does almost perfectly describe today's Maverick truck in the marketplace: Simple. Price-wise, simple to own, if you can get one. But, as a teenager in the 70's, Mavericks were never impressive, and I would not have reused the name. If my Maverick truck ever arrives, I will now be very happy to have a Maverick in my driveway!

My wife and I had this discussion a while back. Neither of us recall the 70's Maverick as a particularly good car. Sure, some hot-rodded them, as they did the Vega, but they were not the pick of the litter from that era.

That said, I usually go for a practical choice and the modern Maverick fits that goal.

Never took many pics of mine, too busy trying to get it to 140. But here is one of my favorites.

This is a VERY practical vehicle. The fact that it looks so much better than the old Maverick is a huge plus.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Maverick looks like Ford’s label for all things economy, practical and as the OP shared from the original ads simple. Maverick seems to replace things like Focus, Ecosport, and Fiesta vehicles. But still, It does look like Ford has a hit on their hands and pretty soon we will see Maverick SUV’s and no Ecosports. Either way, I’m impressed by the launch/marketing of the Maverick by making entry level exciting. I mean who knew, right?

Wow, that would look amazing recreated on a new Maverick. Two tone paint scheme, shadow black over Rapid Red. Black interior. Black steelies, some screaming white wall lettered BFG's, wide. Black grill and bar.

I could go for that!

When I first read the name for the new Ford truck, I was not too impressed. Back in the 70s, I drove a Ford Maverick car in driver education class. Despite being a lifelong fan of Ford products, I really disliked the car. Over time, I've gotten accustomed to the idea of the new truck having the old Maverick name. Really looking forward to having one parked in my driveway.

a nod to the past....great idea. There were great paint schemes in the 70's.

How ironic that one of the major selling points in 1970 was $1995; and today, $19,995.

SuperBomb? Are they referring to the Pinto?
yeah, I am surprised that Ford would not want to sweep away the Pinto and Maverick histories..

Ford probably assumes (wrongly?) that the vast majority of Maverick customers are too young to remember the Pinto and Maverick cars.
I wouldn't say wrongly. Before I started looking into this truck I had no clue there was a previous Maverick in the Ford lineup. Won't be the first or last time a company resurrects an old product name.

Growing up, my best friends dad had a Maverick. What I remember most was barely being able to see out the windhield because he was constanly smoking cigars in it.
