The eCVT doesn't lose any time to shift points, and can stay and hold peak horsepower which is more efficient, so that helps some.

Even so, the only way it makes sense in the 45-65mph test is if its more of a rolling race type of test where you're going 45mph at a cruise so the RPMs are nice and low, you punch it, and then count until you hit 65mph.

The eCVT can surely "downshift" (adjust ratio) faster than the 8-speed automatic, so that lag can compensate for the lower horsepower. Of course a driver anticipating a pass zone can also manually downshift the automatic before the acceleration, removing that lag.

Yeah. It's instant and consistent e-power. Helps to explain the early hybrid test drives where the reviewers were commenting on the "smooth" acceleration/power. I think it's interesting to see empirically. I know a lot of the argument for the EB was it's power at highway speeds (I was a bit skeptical), but it seems like the hybrid at least keeps up. Would like to see more controlled testing, but the hybrid being a half second faster from 40-80 is interesting.

Another X-factor though is how effortless it feels. At full tilt the 2.5H is objectively a lot noisier than the ecoboost that gets some extra muffling from the turbo itself, and especially on the highway you're going to get gobs of boost so that for most passing maneuvers where you're not flooring it, the transmission may not downshift at all and will just woosh about, whereas the 2.5H may be adjusting RPMs quite a bit causing more NVH.

might want to check your chart again.... the ONLY place it shows Hybrid faster is PASSING, 45-65 MPH, and that is only by .1 second? Side by side columns show EB faster every time

Not my chart. It's motortrend's. And it clearly shows that the hybrid (12.5-4.2=8.3) is faster than the EB (12.4-3.5=8.9) from 40 to 80. all the times shown are from zero so the early lead by the EB leads to the faster times.

I mean the fact that the Hybrid is keeping up as well as it did (talking fractions of a second at every data point) thats pretty dang good. To be fair though, I have seen much better times from the 2.0 on reviewers 0-60 times.

I believe they were testing the 4K gearing with FX4 package. I'd imagine the FWD EB would do better in passing.

passing performance is more critical on two lane roads than just passing on the freeway since (hopefully) there is no oncoming traffic to worry about on the freeway. So the 45-65 performance of the hybrid is reassuring since speeds are lower when driving on the two lane roads.
