It is an adapter for H.E.R.E.
Human Element Range Extender.

It's actual purpose is to hold open the spring loaded flap on the filler tube. Enabling you to add gas from a gas can or additives.

I found out the hard way what its for when I tried to pour gas from a can into our maverick and it spilled all down the side.

If you run out of gas and have to pour from a gas can. Only way to get fuel in your tank

Combine this with one of the new gas cans that have a spring loaded spout requiring it to push against your fill tube before gas will flow and you might as well just start pushing! No way are you getting gas in your Mav!

a warning : Can’t be used to siphon fuel from the tank, unless special siphon rigged up to use. Lesson learned…a neb borrowed my siphon rig, stuck plastic hose in her car nozzle tried to pull it out, couldn’t . Flapper caught it. Had to get mobile service to get it out.

It is also an indication that you have not spent 15 minutes with your owner's manual. Not meaning to be snarky here - admittedly, advice is worth what you pay for it, and mine is free. But, I highly suggest you spend a few minutes with the manual. Turn down the corners of the pages that show the dash icons, the procedure and location of the jack and spare, the tire pressure alert system (especially how it resets), the oil change monitor reset, fuel door release backup...... you get the idea. Voice of experience here. Best of luck with your new truck !

Not gonna happen for a 2025 model owner--they don't get a paper owner's manual.

Knock out those plastic fins inside the tube and the gas will flow smoothly without any splashback. Find a way to keep it stationary and use a slotted screwdriver and a hammer and they easily break free. The adapter suddenly becomes useful.
