Dangerous problem with adaptive cruise control 2025. Lariat hybrid.

Adaptive cruise control seems to work well, and as advertised, but there’s a very dangerous problem that I have with my Lariat.

I can set everything and everything works as advertised, except for when I push the speed up or speed down button on the wheel. If I give it one quick push up it changes speed by one. Kph. If I push it for even just a second longer, the speed runs away! I have to hit the brakes or hit the cruise control button to take it out of cruise control.

If I want to change speeds by more than a couple of KPH, I have to accelerate to the desired speed, and then hit the set function. I can deal with this cause. I know what happens, but I would be very afraid if I ever let anybody else. Use my truck.

I can wait to have it. Looked at at the dealership. The next time I take it in, but does anybody else have this problem?

It's my experience with my '25 Lariat Hybrid that a quick tap increments (or decrements) the speed by one unit (MPH or KPH, depending on how your units are configured). Holding it a bit longer bumps it up by 5 units multiple times for as long as it's held. This is opposite of our Subaru Forester where a quick tap is 5 units of speed, and holding increments/decrements it in 1 unit intervals. Very confusing when I'm driving one after having driven the other for a quite a while.

I have a 2025 Lariat Hybrid as well..

One quick press up or down on the selector results in one digit increase or decrease.

If I hold it for 2 seconds and let it go, it increases or decreases by 10 digits...keep holding it up and yes, it will run away at 10 kph increase or decrease every half second (ish) until you release the selector button. It can get away if you are not familiar.

So, when driving with no other vehicles around...maybe when doing under the speed limit and then give the selector a quick press up...should increase by one digit per press.

Then try holding it a bit longer (say, oh..1.5 or 2 steamboats) and release it. It should go up by ten digits..if it goes up 20 you know you held it too long so just hit the little "x" to the selectors right to nullify cruise control, or tap the brakes.

As stated earlier it is also opposite the Subaru Crosstrek we traded in so we had to adjust how we do things.

It shouldn't be a big deal, once you figure out how to use the controls but I feel the Subaru method of adjusting cruise speed is inherently more safe (short press for 10 digit change and holding for single digit adjustment). You just can't easily have it run away on you.

the way it's done allows precise changes in target speed without looking--e.g., three taps for 3mph.

the button isn't equipped for it, but tactile feedback (like on an iPhone screen) for each unit while holding could be a nice touch.

One tap is 1 MPH - hold it up or down, it goes in 5 MPH steps until you release the button. Did the same on my 2023 Explorer, 2022 and 2021 Bronco and 2021 Corsair. Not a danger and not a problem.

If you want to increase your speed by 5 units (mph or kph), just can just tap it up 5 times. I do this all the time and it works correctly. All of my previous cars and trucks with cruise work like this too.

It's not a 'dangerous problem', it's operator error.

Just recently got back from a 1,500 mile round trip, a lot of which was through small towns where the speed limits would ratchet up/down 75-65-55-45-35-30-35-45-55-65-75 as you approached and departed on the highway. I used cruise control nearly constantly and never once considered that I needed to hold the accel/decel button down instead of doing the multiple clicks.

That said, it seems like the system is operating as designed.

I have always done multiple clicks, unless I was going from 45 to 60 or 70. Then I just hlod it until I hit the speed I want and release. Then I can click to the desired speed.

Another consideration you may want to consider is the recognition of speed limit signs. You can adjust the cruise control to go faster than the speed limit. As far as I can tell if you are using cruise control it automatically adjusts the speed when it sees a new sign, and when it recognizes an upcoming curve in the road.
I have found that if I hit resume, push the toggle in not up or down, it will adjust my speed based on the last sign it saw. I love the adaptive cruise control and lane keep but I’m still getting used to letting the car drive itself

That feature is working as intended. It's the same as my last car (VW).

Nope, not a problem at all. It’s similar to how my Tesla works. Push up until you feel a soft click and it goes up by 1 mph. Keep pushing up further until you feel a hard click and it goes up by 5 mph. Same thing pushing it down to decrease speed. Had never seen that in a car before, but after using it for something like 5 minutes, it was totally fine. If I accidentally click up by five, I simply hit the down arrow 2-3 times to get it back where I want it.

I like the way Tesla does it better than Ford, because it gives you haptic feedback, reducing the need to check the numbers on the dash.

Would I be worried to let others drive my Maverick or my Tesla because of this? Nope. Anybody with half a brain can figure it out.

Subaru has flipped their design of their Adaptive Cruise Control scheme since some the latest models. We have a 2024 Crosstrek that has the +1/+5 mph behavior opposite what it was in the past. Past two ACC vehicles were a Legacy and the wife’s Forester. Both were as you described. Subaru is more in line with most automakers IIRC from what I read on the topic when I learned it was flipped.

I missed the flipped option on my Crosstrek. My Maverick doesn’t have ACC. So. Meh. Gotta keep my eyes on the road.
