You may or may not have read that GM has gotten rid of Apple CarPlay and android auto in their Chevy line. I’m not sure about the other lines but I definitely know Chevy was affected. So I read an article this morning when I was eating breakfast that stated that Ford, Toyota, and Volvo are shortly to follow. The entire premise is that they are developing their own software within the vehicle to use. I’m not sure if that is a good idea. Many people like myself love Apple CarPlay. And there’s other people out there who like android auto. I’m not quite sure why you would chase people away getting rid of a feature that is so widely used and is beneficial. People like myself do not like to text and drive. There are some people out there that for some reason too, but I do not like to text and drive with my hands on the phone. I really enjoy CarPlay for the multitude of features that has whether it’s texting by voice, listening to music, using maps. Whatever it may be.

The question I have for you all is this. Is this a feature that you religiously use and would this be something that would affect your day-to-day life or is it something that you can deal without? Reading on the forums and reading from Chevy forums people have said hey all you have to do is buy an external Apple CarPlay screen. But for me that doesn’t seem conducive because now you’re spending money on an external stereo that you should not have to buy. I don’t see the benefit of this decision

Why are they doing it? Control, and owner data. If they control the system entirely, it’s easier to sell more of what vehicle owners do while driving. Right now Apple and Alphabet get a piece of that action, and vehicle companies don’t like it.

Do I like using the feature of Apple CarPlay? Sure, it is way better than the manufacturer software. Is it make or break for me? Not really, I don’t use it very much, since I much prefer not connecting my phone to stuff that sells my info to random third parties.

This is absolutely the answer. The car manufacturers want all of the control over your data.

However, that doesn't mean that they're all going to follow the lead of GM. In fact, I'd love to know what article the OP read because Ford's CEO Jim Farley has stated several times over the past three years that Ford has no intention of no longer offering Carplay and Android Auto in their vehicles.
At one point he even stated "we kind of lost that battle 10 years ago".
As far as I now GM is the only one so far to announce any plans go phase out Carplay & AA.

Android Auto is an absolute necessary feature in any new car purchase for me. I've used many different manufacturer systems in the past and they were all terrible.

Not being the OP, I don’t know his source, sorry.

I know a few manufacturers are planning to switch to the full Android car system, which goes beyond what Android Auto does, I’m sure you’ll have options you like.

Back in August Ford announced that moving forward Sync will eventually fade away as they move forward with what is now known as The Ford Digital Experience. As of right now the Ford Digital Experience still supports CP and AA.

Ford just needs to have Ford Vehicle Connect (or whatever you call it) for Ford Vehicles which would interface with any Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device.

Definitely i’ll go get that article again and I’ll share it here. I’m glad to know that you have brought up the reference to the Ford CEO. Used to be an android guy and I’m not anti-android at all I mean there may be a potential I may go back there again one day but the point is I use this religiously on the road. Always using it for music or navigation or questions or any of that stuff. So Apple CarPlay is critical for me just like android auto is critical for you.

And I can understand the mentality of having control over other people but I don’t understand why companies would not want to gain more sales. To me and maybe it’s just me but I feel like keeping features like android auto or Apple CarPlay in your vehicle would bring people more to that brand now I’m not saying that it guarantees a sale but when you take something away from somebody that lessons the opportunity you have of getting said sale

"Ford Digital Experience". Will it work similar to the 12V battery management system? Ha! Perhaps they have gotten rid of some software engineers and hired better ones!

Why not just post the actual link to the article so everyone can easily access it and read it instead of a picture?
Also ditching Sync 4 has nothing to do with Carplay & AA being offered.

This is just another revenue stream they are playing with.
It has very little to do with "control" or "spying" other than a way to monetize it.
If people start rejecting it by buying vehicles that do NOT have proprietary software, they'll stop.

Remember that one Euro car company played with "monthly subscription" to activate some features like GPS, CC, even AC. It didn't go over very well.

Personally, I'd pay EXTRA to have a totally disconnected car, that you could replace the screen with aftermarket radios, or add/replace other devices in without causing loss of function. Remember those old car radios that you could pull out, or remove the faceplate to reduce chance of theft? What if cars started coming with a universal Tablet docking station where you used whatever Tablet (or phone) you wanted? You could use whatever software you wanted, update instantly if needed at home for free, or cost of app? CarPlay and Android Auto are steps in this direction.

Instead, we are tethered to whatever the Mfg provides, which is often YEARS behind current tech and apps. Even their "top tier" MySuck model.

I believe that unlike Sync which is coded in house by Ford the Ford Digital Experience is just an overlay on top of Android Automotive OS. Which should not be confuse with Android Auto. They are two different things.

“ The car manufacturers want all of the control over your data.”

That is or should be obvious to all.
Data mining is profitable.

Would you want other companies profiting in your mine ?
None of this should be a surprise.
