2025 AWD Hybrid making thunk or thud noise from the rear at around 13 mph when braking

Thanks for taking the poll and please let us know if you happen to figure out the cause of the noise and I will do the same. I have a 2025 AWD Hybrid and it seems as though it's happening on both AWD hybrids and AWD EB's so it has to have something to do with AWD at least that's the general thought.

Hey all, the OP of this thread commented on my thread from over a year ago where I had this same issue. I figured I would share the same update here.

My 24 XLT Tremor had this exact issue. 13mph, traction control, everything. I did not have to fight my dealer, they heard it right away.

The dealer kept the truck for months trying to fix it. In this time they COMPLETELY replaced the rear differential and PTU and various other parts. Nothing worked. The only way I resolved the issue was by lemon lawing my truck and getting my money back...

For what it's worth, I did buy almost the exact same truck afterwards (24 Tremor, this time Lariat) and the issue has not been present on this vehicle.

I would bet that this is a computer issue that my dealership couldn't figure out. Especially since the other thread OP linked was apparently fixed with a computer patch.

Hoping you all can find a solution that doesn't involve dumpstering your vehicle!

OP here and you mention the other thread where @PatientlyWaiting4Mine mentions his 2022 Hybrid was fixed with a computer patch. He referenced TSB 24-2493 which had to do with grabby brakes on the Hybrids. The 2022 Hybrids didn't have AWD as AWD wasn't available on the hybrids until the 2025 model year. Not saying that there isn't some sort of computer fix or update to fix this thunk for our AWD Mavericks but unfortunately TSB 24-2493 isn't it

Back in February, @SouthbayTremor posted that he took his Tremor off-roading and hit a rock at 40 MPH, busting his RDU. You can find the post here:

According to the post, the damage resulted in him being able to hear the AWD engaging and disengaging very clearly. He observed, “The rear driveshaft shaft is always engaged from 0-17 mph when accelerating and when your slowing down the rear driveshaft engages when you pass 13 mph.”

This seems to be the most likely cause of the mysterious “13 MPH Thud” while decelerating in AWD Mavericks.

So traction control off disengaging the rear, or setting higher limit to usage that coasting down at about 13 perhaps disengages.

Here's a test - Slippery mode.
Kinda wondering if you engage that mode, does that override TC being disabled, probably not.

That's going to change when the rear is included, and perhaps a different speed line on coast down.

Be aware you'll need more room to coast!

Slippery mode does not turn off Traction Control, I was just reading about it

At this point, we’re four model years into the Maverick AWD and there doesn’t seem to be any problems or damage. Probably just chalk it up to another of the many random “weird” noises that the Maverick makes when it’s operating as designed.

If you read the replies from JJ JJ JJ on this Maverick group below you can see a copy of the work order from their Ford dealer where the dealer agreed to replace the RDU after getting some instruction from the Ford hotline it appears. Sounds like a new RDU fixed this noise (at least for now):

I don’t want to have to go back through all the replies from the various threads about this but I’m pretty positive there was one or possibly even two people saying that ford agreed to replace the RDU on theirs and it did not fix the issue. So at this point I dk what to do or to even do anything lol, I’m almost thinking the heck with it and just worry about it if something comes up, as I said in the other threads aside from the noise being there the drivability is perfectly fine.

I swear the noise is getting louder in mine but it may just be in my head as I know as I approach that 13 mph mark the big thud is coming. If it does get any worse for me I'll probably break down and take it in at least to get it on the record so to speak. I believe Ford is aware of this issue as per that work order someone's dealer spoke with the Ford Hotline regarding the issue so I think that's at least a step in the right direction.

I'm absolutely positive my truck didn't make the noise when I bought it brand new (25 AWD Hybrid) or for the first 2 or 3 months of ownership. Per the poll I started it says that 76% of respondents report no thunk vs 24 % who do on a sample size of 83. Probably too small a sample size to draw any kind of conclusion from but interesting nonetheless. Also I think there are probably those who have the thud but either don't hear it or just have never noticed it...

Agreed, mine didn’t either when I first went to drive it after they told me it had finally got delivered. I don’t think mine is necessarily getting “worse” but like you said I’m partial to thinking we know it’s there and it’s more of an anticipation thing more than anything. My wife drives it a couple times a week and she’s never mentioned it if that says anything.

Oh, I know slippery mode doesn't turn off traction control - that would defeat the purpose of slippery mode to assist traction in, well, slippery conditions.

My question was - in slippery mode, which does change the interaction of traction control and rear wheel drive being brought in - does it change the coast down speed or even the sound at all.

Change to slippery mode - coast down exactly the same - same noise?

Yeah I get this, too. I have no idea what it could be, might try to bring it to the dealership but I know it'll be a goose chase.

The jury is still out on exactly what is causing the issue but one of the working theories is that is has to do with the AWD system engaging at that 13 mph mark when your slowing down. From my understanding the AWD system engages when slowing down at around that 13 mph mark so that the system is in AWD will you are accelerating from from the next stop. Once up to speed the AWD will disengage if the system senses that AWD is not needed - not sure at what speed that disengagement occurs. That's my understanding of the AWD system but I've been wrong before.

The strange thing is that it seems most folks AWD Mavericks don't make the noise so in my end the noise is not normal and it sure sounds like it'll cause some sort of damage long term. If you look at the first post in this thread and go to the Facebook thread I linked you can read in the replies where someone got their dealer to replace their RDU (rear drive unit) was was determined to be the cause of the noise. The person was very persistent with their dealer and the dealer got instruction from the Ford tech hotline. You can read all about it on the work order that they posted from their dealer as it has a lot of good notes that the tech made, etc.

I will probably need to get my truck into the dealer when I have time as the noise on mine is there 100% of the time too and seems like to may be getting worse over time plus I can feel it when it's really bad (almost like a jolt through the drive train). I bought my 25 AWD Hybrid brand new in April and I'm 100% certain my truck did not do this when I initially test drove or for the first two or three months of ownership. Did you buy your truck new? When did you discover it doing the 13 mph clunk?

Hopefully we get to the bottom of this as I don't think the noise is normal and most likely will lead to something failing down the road...
