Turned cold here and my 13 mph thunk when slowing down seems to have disappeared on AWD Maverick

I drove yesterday with the warmer weather in WNY and the thump noise was back. Turned off the traction control and noise was gone. Should have colder weather again this weekend and will see what happens.
I appreciate the data point. Do you or anyone know why the clunk disappears when we are turning traction control off? Does turning TC off in our Mav's mean that the AWD does not engage at all? I'm asking as I'm not sure what role TC plays with the AWD system's in our Mav's.

That's good to hear that you don't have the thunk at all in our truck because it really does take away from the smoothness of the truck. How many miles do you have on it? It's just really strange that some trucks do it and some don't.

How loud is it? I haven't really noticed any thunking on mine at any speed, but I also haven't really been listening for it. Currently at 11K miles. It doesn't really get consistently cold enough down here for me to test if there are any temp-related changes, unfortunately.

On my truck the noise is usually pretty loud and noticeable. When you are going say 25 mph or so and slow down the noise doesn't seem to be as loud as say if your going 45 mph or so. That's good that you haven't noticed anything so hopefully your in the clear at 11K miles. Once you get up to speed turn the radio all the way down and brake and watch for that 13mph mark and listen for the thunk. By now I would think you would've noticed something as normally the thunk seems to manifest itself within the first few thousand miles. I bought my truck new and didn't notice it until a few months and a few thousand miles into ownership.

I have 6,000 miles now. Bought it in April.

As far as I'm concerned, I have a lot of bumper to bumper warranty left.
However, it seems like about 40°f is the bump cold level. When it's hot, i can do it in their parking lot. It will bump at 13ish mph every time on deceleration . I have a 24, with about 6k. I hope that it gets through idiot service writers to the old men i still know. Something is not right. Bought it with literally 200 miles on it.

I agree with your assessment of things changing around the 40f mark. I'm in SE MI and it's started warming up here again (will probably break a record on Friday with high temp of almost 60). I think it was in the lower 50's here today when I was running some errands and my truck was consistently thunking when slowing down at the 13 mph mark like clockwork. My truck will also thunk in a parking lot at that same 13 mph when it's hot as well. I'm with you that something's not right here but these dealers tend to just say they either can't replicate the issue or they have no idea. I'm not game on letting a dealer have my truck for multiple days or more just to be told there is no fix.

I know there's quite a few of us out here with the same issue so hopefully someone, somewhere figures out what is causing the thunk noise and what the fix ultimately will be. Honestly it's such a pleasure driving the truck when it's cold outside as it's so smooth and knowing that the thunk isn't doing to happen. As soon as it warms up outside driving the trunk and constantly listening to the thunk is a major let down at least to me:( I know I can turn of the traction control so I don't have to listen to it but still.

I don't if anyone has actually captured the sound of the 13 mph thunk on audio so that owners that don't have the thunk can hear what we are talking about. If I had a Go Pro I could get brave and try and capture it on video (and audio) similar to what member @MarkLally did when he videoed how the AWD system functions on the Maverick. Anyone with the thunk and who has a Go Pro feeling up to the task? Maybe @MarkLally could offer up some pointers on how he and his wife were able to rig up their Maverick and film that awesome video. It would be awesome if somehow using a GoPro could pinpoint where the noise is actually coming from but that might take multliple GoPro's to capture different parts of the AWD system.

I mean no disrespect, but I was a ford gasoline senior master tech. Stars id started with 00103xxxx. Im that old. I left the industry because of warranty and flat rate pay issues. The bump is not normal, typical, but not intentional and I intend to use my contacts to fix mine. First I need to easily duplicate it. Basically wait until it warms up.

When you do come up with a fix for the problem please let the rest of us mere mortals in on the secret:)

When it warms up and it'll do it in their parking lot it's going in.

This almost reminds me of in 04 new body style, with the 2 piece driveshafts that weren't lubed on certain f150s. They'd bump.

I bought this camera

and this clamp
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CL4VQ71L?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

If I had to do it again, I would have spent an extra $15.00 and bought the Pro version of the camera, as it a MUCH easier set up and control method. I didn't take a picture of how clamped it under the truck, but I think I remember clamping it to the differential housing itself.
I bought the remote mic for the camera, as I wanted to record my voice, but the camera itself has a built in mic that would probably work good for recording the noise under the vehicle. You would probably want to find the smoothest road you could find, so that the road noise wouldn't mask the mechanical noise. Perhaps the remote mic taped to different locations on the differential may work better.
The remote mic link is

Good luck to anyone who wants to give it a try.

I would have thought that the Ford engineers would have done this themselves. That and the knowledge that the problem goes away when traction control is turned off would be all the information they need to zero in on the problem.

Thank you for the links and the advice on set up. This is something I wouldn't even think about tackling until Spring around here but maybe someone in a nice warm climate can take one for the team and figure it out:)

Well it finally turned halfway warm here in MI (hit 50 degrees yesterday) and of course my 13 MPH thunk is back just like clockwork. Anyone else seeing the same thing in their neck of the woods if it warmed up as well? Honestly it was nice driving the truck when it's cold out and not having to listen and feel the 13 MPH thunk at every stop. Hopefully someone is able to get to the bottom of this and see what is causing the noise and what the remedy is. I know I should take it into the dealer but I'm hoping someone figures this noise out first so that I don't have to waste time at the dealer with them telling me the noise is normal and nothing to worry about.
