A lot of this depends on the length of the bed which everyone has sacrificed to have four doors. I mean trucks smaller than the Maverick have had beds that are longer.Mid size: 4x8 plywood will fit on top off wheel wells with 24" or less hanging over closed tailgate.
You would need three definitions for those. The El Camino and Ranchero were based on full size car platforms. Not especially compact. The Subaru Brat is compact, similar to the old Dodge D-50 and Ford Courier. Not a truck by definition. It is a compact or SUV with a bed. A Pickup, yes. Would you call the Honda Ridgeline, El Camino, Ranchero, Subaru Brat trucks?
I would not call it mid-sized. If it were, could someone give me an example of a compact truck?
What specs make a ‘mid-sized’ truck or is it open to opinion?
Bob
The first generation of El Camino was based on the full-size B-body platform (Impala, Caprice), but the later generations were based on the mid-size A-body platform (Chevelle, Malibu). The El Camino and Ranchero were based on full size car platforms.
But for a 2025 F-150:Full sized truck: 122 wheelbase 195 length, 79 width, 3,550 lbs.
But for a 2025 F-150:
Wheelbase 145.4", Length 232.0", width 95.7", curb weight 4,941 lbs.
No way in the world is a Maverick a “full-size” truck….. not when you have several trucks in the Ford lineup that can be configured longer, wider and bigger.![]()

Compact truck: 101 wheelbase, 169 length, 62 width, 2,286 lbs.

Midsized truck: 107 wheelbase, 176 length, 66 width, 2,559 lbs.

Full sized truck: 122 wheelbase 195 length, 79 width, 3,550 lbs.

Full sized truck: 121.1 wheelbase, 199.7 length, 73 width, 3,800 lbs.
The reason I made that post is to point out how the pickup industry has underwent decades of size creep and how the public is either numb to the size creep, or oblivious to it.No way in the world is a Maverick a “full-size” truck….. not when you have several trucks in the Ford lineup that can be configured longer, wider and bigger.![]()

You're free to buy a new small, economical truck from any other manufacturer. I wish you luck finding one, though.Personally, I like small, economical trucks. And the Maverick is not small.
state of Ohio considers it to be a non-commercial vehicle for which they charge you extra on the tag so it must be a truck of sortsNot a truck by definition. It is a compact or SUV with a bed. A Pickup, yes. Would you call the Honda Ridgeline, El Camino, Ranchero, Subaru Brat trucks?
The Maverick is as long as the Ford Explorer (Ford's mid sized SUV). So I'm guessing they're stretching the size class a bit (in marketing) because of that. But if it were official then the Maverick would easily have the worst towing spec of any mid sized truck. Put simply, the Ranger is Ford's mid sized truck, not the Maverick.I would not call it mid-sized. If it were, could someone give me an example of a compact truck?
