‘’The new Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Two front wheel drive cars pretending to be pickups might be the closest we can get to something as useful as the old Ranger and S-10 in today’s regulatory environment, but it really doesn’t fully fill the void left behind by the loss of those trucks to people who actually used them as trucks.’’

what ?

a very hollow, empty statement, cmon, Jalopnik, you can’t paint without the paint and the brush.

I had a fellow at work asking me why I am not buying a diesel. I could spend $60,000 AND get 24 mpg.

Hint, it's not overrated to people that have normal needs. Actually with maverick I am getting better gas milage and double the payload of my current vehicle.
This is just it and something "Truck Guys" will never get. Ive ben asked why I got something I cant do anything with... I said.. it does EVERYTHING I NEED it to do.. I havent found myself yet going... "I need a bigger truck for this"

I look back over the last40 years(just realized ive been driving for 40 years now never paid attention) I said IF I had my maverick sized truck is there ANY time Id have said.. not enough truck.. and i said.. Nope .. So if ive not NEEDED a full(or even mid as I had a 1995 Tacoma and a 1999 Frontier) size truck well...ever...I dont haul big loads, I dont tow anything heavy.. I dont do heavy off road or rock climbing/trail running... I do want need AWD/4x4 for its use in snow and off road as far as logging trails and fields go to get to hunting/fishing spots.

this isnt over rated its perfect for someone that wants the awesome utility of a USEFUL bed size and great MPG(anything that can get 30+ MPG highway IMO is great for a truck and this will get 30+) and doesnt need big towing/hauling/serious off road ability..

When I say that they mostly dont get it or roll their eyes as if they cant comprehend not having a giant truck that gets 15 MPG

Jalopnick and gone to absolute crap. Lazy articles that I think are mostly written by AI with some hack who knows nothing publishing them.

How the mighty have fallen (flat on their ass).

HIGHLY RECOMEND going over the "theAutopian" for actual fun and interesting journalism. Many of the old, GOOD ex-Jalopnik writers are there.

https://www.theautopian.com/

and oh yeah, that Jalopnik slop was just lazy click-bait.

That's a crock of sh!t to begin with. This truck can handle anything outside the towing limits any mid size truck can do and with much better MPG. They make for good kid haulers too with an oversized trunk once you add the tonneau cover since they drive and handle more like a car than a truck and fit into car sized spaces. Unlike your standard mommy mobile, daddy can use it also for daddy stuff without the usual complaints about MPG, size, etc.

The website’s rollup of readers comments was of no substance. Both these vehicles are niche vehicles that fill a need, no more no less, and they do it very well. Never designed to replace an F350 powerstroke, those that don’t like it, don’t understand it purpose.
You realize that the F350 Powerstroke is a very niche vehicle that almost nobody actually needs, right? By your definition, all vehicles of all sizes are niche vehicles. Wanting a stupidly overpriced F350 that gets 4mpg and rides like it has no suspension at all, to haul less that 2k is just plain broken thinking.

Opinions, well you all know the saying, everyone has one, and we all have something else in common. You know what? It doesn't matter at the end of the day. I'm a Boomer. I haven't been this excited about a vehicle in a very long time. I like it. I don't really care what anyone else thinks. Neither should you. And you really shouldn't care what I think. Love your truck. Your way.

For a pickup, my main alternatives were an used Frontier or an used Tacoma (which was also on this list). Bigger bed, which may be useful for me once/year.

The 4K/AWD Maverick was my desired option, but I didn't wait any longer.

The Maverick drives better to me than any other pickup I've driven. If I had gone with one of the used options, they would have been driven less often and saved for when they were needed.

So the 2010 ranger had lower maximum towing capacity, very similar payload, worse MPG engine options, and small cabs.

The only thing it really had that was better was the bed was a little longer. Some people would rather have that longer bed with the smaller cab, but not many. I'd hardly call that unable to fill the void.

So in otherwords we AGREE...I think its great and better than a mid/full size because it does everything I want it to, had good bed size(useable bed) and gets 30+ MPG. Good to see we agree totally.

First of all, Jalopnick, need I say more?

I would be willing to bet that your average driver today couldn't tell the difference between front/rear/all wheel drive from the drivers seat.
