Disappointed in this tonneau cover

I’ve had my 22 Maverick for 3 years this October, and overall I’ve been very pleased. Through 78xxxk miles and numerous recalls and TSB’s, my dealer Holman Ford in Turnersville NJ has been very accommodating. Until now.
I ordered the truck with Fords hard tri-fold tonneau cover from the factory, it was less expensive than the dealer-installed covers available at that time. Recently, on the panel closest to the tailgate, I noticed that the rubber “hinge” that separates the hard panels was developing a tear. Then it tore completely from the left to the right side, creating an opening between the panels when folded forward. The other “hinges” are fine. Learning that it was actually a BAKflip mx4, I took it to a local BAK dealer and they said to take it to Ford. My dealer said it was past the 3yr/36k warranty, and that my extended warranty wouldn’t cover it either. A phone call to RealTruck indicated that there is no fix for it, only complete replacement. And that it would not be covered under their 5 year warranty because it was a Ford labeled cover. This seems unreasonable to me that an $1100 cover just 3yrs old is basically trash.
Anyone have this issue, and what was your solution? Ford, if you are listening is there anything you can do?

Just found this on Youtube. I am not sure if its the same tonneau cover, but this may be a temporary fix idea. I would say to watch whole video to see what he says and see what he does to give you a better idea if its worth the effort, but otherwise to me the main points are at 4:38....mark he shows the product he bought, and around the 12:30 mark he starts to show his fix.



it may be a stupid or genius idea...all depends on what you think. but he apparently had success with it. just not sure how long it may last, but worth a try i guess.

I also have the same cover and only at 2yrs and 30k miles on it so far. but it wont bother me at all if I have to do the rubber tape patch if mine starts to do that...as long as it keeps the water out during rain. but kind of sucks to know that this most likely will be an issue with mine too.

I bought a $125 version of a soft tri-fold tonneau cover off of e-Bay and am very happy with it. Easy to install, fits great and no water leaks. Easy to fold when needed and looks great.

Unfortunate that sucks ! I would try gorilla tape or some other type of water proof tape that I have seen advertised . Maybe a temporary fix that can be replaced easily . You could try a piano style hinge with a rubberized coating over it . just a couple of ideas ! Good luck . I have a undercover armor tonneau that I bought from realtruck but not sure of warranty . my maverick/tonneau has always been garaged and not in the weather . truck only has less than 11k miles after 3.5 years .

Also bought off Ebay for $210 Tri-Fold Gater brand...and 3 yrs old, no leaks, zero complaints. My same tonneau cover is now on AliExpress for $130. The majority of tonneaus off the internet are made in Asia.

Mine still looks like the day I installed it. If people have a tonneau parked outdoors, I can see them deteriorating and leaking much quicker. If mine is not on the road it is in a garage.

Thanks for this post. I am looking at covers and will take BackFlip off my list. If that is how they stand behind their product, I am not interested.

You aren't the only one having trouble with the hinge seals on your "BakFlip Tonneau cover.

I think you have the right idea by Eliminating BakFlip tonneau covers, from your choices.
There are too many good ones to choose from.
I paid less than $400 for my, double folding, 3 panel, hard tonneau cover.
I'm still satisfied with it.
Mine isn't as versatile or as nice looking as the bakflip.

Wow this great; I actually bought a roll of black flextape since it says can be used outdoors. Gonna look up the tape he used. Thanks for the tip, beats replacing it (for now).

I think you have the right idea of eliminating BakFlip tonneau covers, from your choices.
There are too good ones to choose from.
I paid less than $400 for mine and I'm still satisfied with it.
Mine isn't as versatile as the bakflip.

Did you buy it installed with the truck?
I had the same thing, the dealer took pictures and sent to warranty department and they replaced with a new cover.
Took a while for the cover to show up but it did eventually.

I did purchase it when I ordered the truck. The dealer took photos and submitted them as a warranty claim, but it was denied due to it being past the 36k mileage (less than 3 yrs though), and it is excluded from the extended warranty.

Sorry for your experience, but that's good to know. I have the same tonneau cover, and I park outside. (But my Maverick isn't even a year old yet.)

Like the milage caused damage to the cover
I live in the desert so i figured it was only a matter of time before the plastic/rubber components of the cover were going to go.
Guess I lucked out as I was under 20k
Sorry your dealer didn't stand up for you, of course I am dealing with a scratch I am trying to get them to fix since I bought the paint coverage but since the scratch goes beyond the clear coat it is not covered. Last time i checked the coat goes over the paint.

Geez that’s crazy! I primarily bought the extended warranty for the drivetrain components, but am learning about all the “exclusions”. Even though I don’t garage the truck, I take good care of it; you wouldn’t know by looking that it has 78k miles on it. Oh well…
