This is expensive and invasive. Do I need to get this spray in liner? I’m using the truck for household projects and driving cross country. Also lot of sand and water from mountain bikes/kayaks.

Sand and water from mountain biking rules out a Bed rug or mat.

Household projects with a bed cover? I'd just get one of those molded rubber bed liner trays.

I've had all the options in past trucks. I personally only like spray-in liners if the bed is uncovered, and that's also only if the truck is somewhere outside the rust belt. Other than that, I strongly dislike them. They stain easily and will always look dirty because they are impossible to clean the fine dirt out unless you really get in there and scrub. They also basically sand anything that you drag across them.

I personally prefer drop-in bed liners. They rubbed the paint bare in spots, but partly because I'm in the southwest, the bare metal never rusted. They are impact-resistant, stain-resistant, easy to wash out, and easy to drag stuff across without damage.

I only suggest a bed rug if you don't carry dirty or sandy things in the bed and effectively use the bed as a large trunk. Otherwise you will be vacuuming sand and dirt out of it until the end of time. They are great for protecting both household goods and the truck bed itself though.

If you're dead-set on getting a spray-in done, I'd personally go for Line-X. Line-X is more like a hard-plastic type material once it dries. Rhino Liner is more rubbery, and also tends to pool in the low spots.

That did seem like the sensible way to go to me, I was gonna be careful, but when gradual attrition was making it start to look ugly, go and get a decent bedliner sprayed then and have a "whole new truck" day a few years down the road.

However, I talked myself into springing for the Lariat, and the factory spray in looks very nice up close. Can't say anything about wear yet.

I have a line-x spray in, a hard tonneau cover, and I cut down a horse stall mat in the bed. If I take out that, the bed looks brand new. The reason I have the horse stall mat cut to size is for a cushion effect for anything in the bed. It's probably an inch thick and keeps things safe. Also if I have to kneel in the bed, it's comfortable and relatively inexpensive.

Because you could risk a few dents and scrapes along with scratched up paint that could start rusting. Bedliners of any type are more impact-resistant, some more than others.

It's a good option to consider. I currently have a purpose-made rubber bed mat. Stuff slides easier than a Line-X (and with less damage) but harder than a drop-in. Things generally stay put unless I make a lot of hard turns. It still attracts dust and fine dirt, but I can just remove the bed mat and wash it. It is very heavy though...around 80lbs.

My first choice is still a drop-in, but that's because it's the best for my particular uses. I am in the southwest and always have a topper/camper shell. I'd rather easily slide things around and just tie them down so they stay put.

Factory spray-ins aren't as durable as Line-X. The factory does exactly zero prep work other than masking the surface. It's durable enough as long as it doesn't get chipped or damaged, but once it does, it's like poking your finger through plastic wrap. Strong until the point that it breaks, and then it just rips apart.

I've helped several friends remove their Ford "tough bed" SIBLs by just chipping a corner and ripping it off in strips a foot wide. Glossy, brand new paint underneath all of them.

Meanwhile, the local Line-X guy spent like a solid 2 hours wirewheeling my Super Duty's bed before even beginning to apply the material.
