Thoughts on this idea that's been burning a hole in my brain.

I've been considering using the bed light housings and adding emergency vehicle type wig-wag Amber lights that would be activated using the emergency blinker circuit. Bed light use preserved, adding LED COB lights to the housing.
Having driven through the hills of Pennsylvania and the notorious fog, Such lighting could only add to visibility when conditions are not great. In fact, I drove through a thunderstorm that was showing as purple on the radar yesterday and wished I had done the mod. Visibility was incredibly poor and the weather app on my phone popped a warning that it had detected I was driving through extremely poor conditions and it suggested I pull over and wait for the storm to pass.

SO...
If such a mod was reasonably easy to install and not ridiculously priced, would you do it?

Why does it have to be automatic?
You can save a lot of cost and complexity if you just added a switch to the lights.

If you're really talking that low visual conditions, maybe something closer to the back of the truck would be better. Four and a half feet might make a lot of difference. Perhaps incorporate a rear fog light into the rear lights as some European makers do.

Easy and cheap = surface-mounted to the rear bumper and triggered by an independent switch.

I agree a rear fog lamp could be quite effective, too. I've imported a few cars and they're a favorite feature, just some added protection against whatever person is driving behind me.

Would you feel comfortable using the hazard flashers in those low visibility conditions ....?
Isn't that what most truckers do ....?

I kinda like this solution...

Fit those and get some magnetic door placards that go something like "Corporate Amalgamated Consolidated Service Inc" and use them as "park anywhere you like" lights too.

Agreed. Most folks upgrade the front lighting (fogs, LEDs) which is fine, but don't think about the rear lighting. The least expensive and easiest route would be to replace the OEM incandescents with LED's. Keep in mind, we have yet to find a reliable LED brake/signal lamp for the hybrids due to Ford's recall, but from what I'm hearing, the EB's have no such problem.

I thought why not just tap into the rear brake/light wiring, but then you've got the problem with the turn signal activating. Maybe having two fogs wouldn't be a bad idea.
