Total bullshit. In reality, most cars run under the limit, and the higher the limit, the higher the percentage of cars that run under the limit.

this isn’t obvious if you’re driving ten mph over, but give At or slightly below the limit and you’ll be surprised at how many cars you’re still passing.
On I 75 if your not ten over or riding with the big trucks in the right lane your in the way and causing great tension and stress and tailgating and unnecessary passing, generally being a rolling road block.
Slower traffic keep right is all I ask.
My Eco likes 85-90 mph when it’s safe.
I don’t tailgate or push it in traffic.
There are plenty of other drivers who ride ass on the left lane slow pokes.
I do my best to stay clear of those drivers.

I just got 39.5 mpg on a 2000 mile round trip this week. But I stick to the right lanes and usually at the speed limit (or ten miles over) -- so most of the driving was at 70mph. Of course, I was at like 35-34 mpg for like the first 800 miles or so until I started going downhill more :p

The original federal highway speed limit of 55mph was enacted in the mid 70s during the oil crisis to reduce fuel consumption. States have the right to enact their own speed limits outside of the federal limit, which they do. Those higher speed limits really don't take into consideration fuel usage, and instead are about getting from A to B faster.

As shown above, highway fuel efficiency numbers are based upon speeds far lower than the 75-80 discussed in this and the many other threads on this topic.
I am consistently 39-42 in mixed, suburban driving while in Normal Mode. My frontier was 18-19. I’m pleased, as the Maverick has countless other upgrades.

Just filled the tank the first time, at 500 miles. And by that, I mean 500.0. I didn't set out to hit that exactly, but was trying to hit 500. And the best price in town was on my way--so once I got there, I drove another two miles and came back, but it still said 499.9. So I drove across to another pump, which did it.

Best price I've paid in years, too: $309.9, 30-50c below the other ARCOs in town! too bad its that far out of my way . . . (plus another 10c for credit, but the card pays back 35, so a near wash. It's been a long time since that 10c was actually more than I'd get back on a gallon, too!)

Anyway, that 35.6 is less than 1% above the 35.3 from the calculator. Maybe I won't bother to make the adjustment.

This is less per mile traveled than when I was in college! (OK, I had a '72 Impala with a 400, so it was thirsty).

Just took a 600 mile road trip to northern Idaho and back to Alberta and got 38mpg total. Driving through the foothills and mountains. Truck only has about 1000 miles on it now. Still breaking it in.

There were a lot of freeway miles on that.

Oh, and the dash to the cross-town DMV to register it in the only appointment I could get before the temporary expired, and was at least a third of the way there when I realized I forgot the envelope of papers . . . and then had to do 24 miles of mostly freeway . . .

I took surface routes back out of curiosity. It claimed 60+ on that trip, as it did coming back from church on Sunday (7 or 8 miles).

Any reasonably lengthed trip in-town is over 40, and climbing after the first few miles.

And, in my defense, I am a rookie.

🤪

not just for hybrids, but I haven't driven anything that small in 40 years (well, unless you count the Miata, but . . . six speed manual with no overdrive; not really designed for mileage . . .)

Anecdote from new hybrid owner. Display shows average of 39.8 right now, but I'm only 100 miles in since I picked it up, time will tell. I do wish the hybrid coach display was half as good as the one in our Prius, which is far better.

Oh, it was a blast. Currently sitting in the garage, waiting for an engine (as it has been since '15!). Transmission went at 40k, replaced with used as it wasn't rebuildable (it had dropped the fluid!). Engine failed at 60k, and the rebuild at 70k. May retired mechanic thinks that it might just be the timing belt. Once I get the time (a couple of cars ahead of it) to get more housing off, he'll look. If not, it gets a ford 2.5 from a focus, which is actually the same engine, but built harder.

It's not that it needs more power--someone 😇 was driving it up the Baker Grade (sustained 6% in the desert) and passed a truck. Top down, AC on. Glanced down, and it was going 105 and still accelerating!

But an overdrive or two would sure be nice; maybe in series to work in all six gears (yes, seriously, six gears, and no overdrive, with 6 being 1:1!).

No popups; it's a 2006. It got bigger that year, and I just barely can fit my 6'2" into it. Need a cushion for the left lalegne for any distance, and have to sit at a funny angle to get my head between roof bars when it rains. Of the 70k on it, well under 1k is with the top down. (yes, you can drive a convertible top down something like 360 days a year in Las Vegas. It helps that it has the same size heater and AC as a full size car; I can feel the AC at 80 with the top down, and had to turn down the heater in the winter).

Anyway, anyone who wants an automatic or a steel dust cover on a roadster shouldn't be allowed to have one; it's not a roadster at that point!

hopefully, trunks again by sometime this summer.

Anyway, I got a reading of over 70mpg today on a 4 mile trip--but I think I dropped in elevation over the course of it. (I found something a couple of years ago that let me get elevation from location on a map, but can't remember what it was)

First question should be…does she watch NASCAR or IndyCar on the weekends?? if yes, there’s your answer for the difference. 😝😝
