Since we’re an Apple household, I spent about $300 buying a Windows laptop, the recommended adapter and the software. You can buy a much cheaper laptop than i did. But a I wanted fairly current Lenovo, so I got an eBay refurbished one with a warranty and a brand new SSD drive. It also has 24Gb memory, which is overkill for Forscan. A good enough laptop can be bought for @$150.

yes, starting from absolutely nothing, $150-250 for a functional windows 11 laptop with a usb port, then $60 for the cable and forscan is $12.90 per year when/if you can buy it. when purchasing is blocked, you can just keep getting the trial over and over.

A very cheap laptop will run FORSCAN. The minimum Windows OS requirement is Windows 2000.

The trial license will do anything you'll want to do for free, you just have to generate a new license every 60 days.

So, the entire investment is whatever you pay for a very cheap, old laptop and a $30 USB OBD adapter. This adapter is what I use, and it works perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094Z7PBLS?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1

Since Windows 10 is EOL in October, a newer 8-gen or better laptop is going to be needed to run Windows 11. Used ones are around $1k, and new ones around $2300. The adapter and anything else is cheap at $50 or $60 on Amazon, and you will need the ForScan software. That's got a time-limited free intro version, but after that it costs $12-something/yr.

first of all, I agree that using a device that is supported is a good idea, even though one of my laptops is stuck on win10 and I haven't retired it yet because it is working fine and was very powerful when I bought it in '16. (i7 quad core with 16gb ram and 1tb ssd.)

but secondly, no you do not have to spend $2300+ let alone 1k+ on a device that supports win11. 4gb ram with win11 is a joke, but 8gb does work as long as you don't have more than a few browser tabs open. https://www.staples.com/hp-15-6-uhd..._24622236?gQT=1&gRefinements=MEASURE:8+GB+RAM
