In our hybrid Maverick, and our other normally aspirated vehicle engines, we only use 88 octane "clear gas".

"Clear gas," is gasoline without ethanol (also called non-ethanol gas), is considered good for a car because it offers improved fuel efficiency and reduces engine wear compared to regular gasoline with ethanol.

Me: 2024 hybrid Lariat = Costco 87 octane, today, Tuesday 3/4/25 priced at $4.68/gallon.

My driving is a mix of stop/go and freeway. I consistently show 44.3- 44.5 mpg using 87 and a light foot. The range after a fillup shows plus/minus 585 miles to empty.

I loved my spunky 2022 Lariat EB but find my '24 hybrid has decent performance and I LOVE my mpg.

I tried a couple of tanks of 91 octane in my hybrid. The only difference I could detect was it sounded a bit less "gruff" if that makes any sense.

I believe the manual says don’t use anything less than 87 so when going to higher elevations and regular is 86 I use the mid grade. Otherwise the 87 works just fine.
Regular is 86 in TX? Most places I've been 87 is regular.

It's available everywhere out west. Only 10 cents more per gallon than 87 regular with ethanol.

Anything above 87 is just wasted money.
You can convince yourself otherwise. Ever notice how much smoother the engine is, how much better the ride and even the radio sounds better after a wash and wax?
Same with high octane gas. You're just mind-f@#$%^g yourself.

I use Mid-Grade. Makes my 24 Hybrid run like a top!

In my Hybrid, I use 87 Octane with TopTier additives, per Ford's recommendation in the manual. Most stations in my area have TopTier in their gas - exception here is walmart.

Higher grades will help with performance & MPG, but only on the ecoboost.

87 octane in all our vehicles. It's surprising how many people seem to think octane is related to energy density.

The last vehicle I owned with a strong tendency to ping was a 1980 F-150 with a 300 straight six with a three-speed manual + overdrive. It was pretty good engine, but early efforts by Ford to increase fuel efficiency led them to advance the timing too aggressively.

I have used regular from the start, and in mixed driving I am at 43.2 mpg avg. I do not have any knocking either. Next level gasoline is $.30-.40 more per gallon, and I never noticed any performance improvements in other vehicles, including my various motorcycles.

You would not get any knocking on 87 because the hybrid is mapped to 87 and runs on 87. Adding additional octane to the hybrid 2.5L yields no benefits.
