We've had some unusual Midwest weather by me, but I finally got the chance to test out the performance in some snowy weather last night. It wasn't particularly heavy snowfall, but the roads weren't fully cleaned yet so that was the real scenario I wanted to see how we did in. It ended up performing how I'd expect: decent traction until you're giving it too much pedal, still needs some attention to stopping because it's still a snow-covered road, etc.

The one thing I wasn't super expecting is even after the truck had plenty of time to warm up, the wipers just weren't performing. There was streaking. There was frozen, unwiped sections in the top left of the drivers side. In general, it was pretty sub-par performance.

So this is ultimately my question, which could inform a solution: What's causing the sub-par performance? I have a few ideas?

1. The stocks wipers themselves are trash - This could be the problem. I'm sure the wipers they put on there aren't any high performance special version. Could simply upgrading these be the easy solution?

2. The wiper design itself is bad - Sometimes they just get it wrong. I don't see any specific reason that the design is bad, but maybe there's just something simple like too much wind up in that corner or something like that. That's obviously not a solution we can address, but maybe there are ways to mitigate it?

3. Maybe it was just the weather - I didn't think the snow was particularly bad, and I had the defrost on high to see if I could mitigate the buildup, but it didn't seem like it could. I was hoping the heat would defrost it and the wipers would eventually knock it off. No dice.

Anyone have any thoughts? It's obviously only one experience but it is something that I almost immediately noticed.

no trouble here in what I assume was the same snow, finally breaking this strange snow drought. The OEM Continentals on the other hand...wooof

I have the heated wiper option, so YMMV. However ice at the top of the wiper travel is not something that heaters would fix, and I don't think that the defrost on any other vehicle would get that area any warmer. How about using the washers?

This is why I like the heated wiper parks on my 22 Maverick with the Lux package, it melts any ice that forms on the wipers.

I recommend using the HI heat setting for normal defrost or MAX defrost to keep the window from icing up.

Washing fluid could be an option. I was trying to avoid using it if need be. That would be part of the mitigation options, though.

I've had this problem on every car that I've ever had when I drive in the winter. I don't mind it so much except for one thing that pisses me off to no end, and that's the fact that every time it leaves a streak or misses some of the water it's right in my line of vision. Giant streak right where I look out the windshield.

I have found the OEM wiper blades to be the best I've ever had on a new vehicle.

As far as driving in snow, my FWD Hybrid does fine. Hopefully you have suitable tires for the task and are driving in Slippery Mode.

If you get stuck, turn off Traction Control before trying to get unstuck.

Sounds like the wiper park isn't heated anymore. Anyone ever heard of an after market park heater? I googled and found some heated wipers themselves, but they look petty janky.

100% agree. Mine lasted about a year before I replaced them, and only because they were starting to streak here and there. Tried Rain X, Trico, and Bosch and they were all reduced to just smearing water around within 4 months or so (have wiper blades gotten this bad the last couple years or am I just unlucky?!)

Needless to say to say, I just threw on some OEM blades the other day for only a few bucks more than the last few sets. Hopefully they last like the originals.

I've always used Bosch icon wiper blades, best on the market My equinox is on its third winter with it set and it's parked outside. OEM wiper blades are usually the worst.

I'd start with replacing the wiper blades with a 3rd party upgrade version before spending time and money on heated. Might just solve your problem with least amount of money spent.

Agree. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the OEM wipers are. Lasted two years for me in the PNW rain and dust on my camping trips 10ish times a year.

The Rain-X that followed...blegh. I'm now using Aero wipers and they've been pretty good so far for $20 with two refills included.

We live in Michigan, truck sits outside.wipers work great.just let it warm up longer or clean your windshield better.

With every Ford truck I have owned 2 Rangers and 4 F 150s the wipers that came with the truck were the best, all aftermarket I tried sucked. I have not had to try out the wipers on the Lariat yet as I only have 178 miles on it.
