Just had the "Performance reduced to lower temperature" on the highway - any ideas?

On the way to work there was a bad accident and I got stuck in almost stand still traffic for about an hour or so.
At some point I had this msg pop up on the dash with the temp light on "Performance reduced to lower temperature"... engine temp on the gauge was normal so i assume this related to the hybrid system temperature.

After that it was almost like the truck went into ECO mode where if you don't press the gas pedal it will favor slightly breaking and putting it in the green to try to charge the battery.... still drivable but a bit weird.. no engine or any other lights came on.. just the temp light.

By then I was close enough to my work place so we will see how this thing acts when I head home later today..

Any idea what's the issue? could it just be that the truck was overheating from sitting in traffic while the outside temp were low? (about 30f).

Truck has about 46,000 miles on it.

Did you check your coolant reservoirs, particularly the one for the inverter? Just trying to figure why it would run hot in those temperatures.

I will on lunch break, was late already to the office so I didn't have time.

Was there any smell you could detect?
It shouldn't really have any effect. What was the temperature setting for your climate control?
If you have them, were you using electric seats and steering wheel?
What drive mode were you in?

Likely the exhaust heat exchanger gone bad. It should have thrown some codes when dealer checks it out. Same issue reported on f150 power boost (hybrid) forum

No smell, temperature on the climate control was probably maybe 75? not sure but not too hot and I do not have heated seats or heated steering wheel..
I always drive on the normal drive mode.

My thinking is.
Unless he can replicate the same situation he experienced going to work.
I think it'll be perfectly normal going back home.
Therein lies the secondary issue.
In the back your mind. You're always wondering when it's going to happen again and if it's going to leave you stranded somewhere.

If it didn't turn on the check engine light or blink. It is possible that some type of code was stored. The dealership should be able to display that.

I do have the following on my "recall/customer satifactory program":

Description
Replacement of exhaust gas heat recovery system if failed
Campaign#
24N04

Is that related you think? this campaign says it should give me a malfunction light which it didn't.. unless the temp light is considered MIL..
Also now thinking about it i remember I previously had a recall something with heated exhaust or something I can't remember what that was as it was a long time ago.. it was a programming recall..

I have a scanner at home I will check for codes this evening. unless my scanner can't read it.

Truck has about 46,000 miles on it.

Overheating caused the Maverick to go into "Limp Home Mode" what you felt as if "Eco" Mode.

I think you probably have a sensor issue.

I think you probably do not have an overheating issue. At least, not for the engine, transmission, battery, or motors.

That heat exchanger is suspicious though. Best of luck and keep us posted.
