New to the 2L Ecoboost AWD Lariat Maverick I was also wondering why this thing only has "Slippery" mode and not Mud/sand for a more robust truck experience. But after testing it in our maritime winters in Canada eh I find it just fine.
-If you have icy conditions or hard packed snow with no hills to climb you may want to leave the traction control on just realize that the power will be limited.
-If you need more power for hills in slippery conditions or sand covered hills turning off the traction control works best because it will have more power.
-If you're in mud or sand then turn off the traction control for more power.

*With that said your choice of tires will make all the difference. My dealer was offering a winter tire package with "General" directional tires. I should have gotten the studded because they're a purely average winter tire. I normally put Blizzak DM-V2 for winter and I'm regretting not getting them. Next winter my Maverick will have the Blizzak tires.

Keep in mind the shared video is for an fx4 maverick. The awd is different in your xlt.

Yeah the decal makes a difference.
The offroad AWD for the Maverick is different from the regular/towing package AWD. The offroad AWD is "Advanced AWD." It may not be mechanically different, but it operates differently.

The "Advanced AWD" is only on the Tremor. The FX4 and XLT/Lariat AWD are only slightly different. The FX4 has an electro-mechanical limited slip rear differential and the non-FX4 doesn't.

The Advanced version on the Tremor has an electronic locking rear diff which offers some benefits in the hairy stuff.

EDIT: I always thought the FX4 had a different rear differential, but checking Ford Parts now, I"m not so sure. There may have been some misinformation back in 2022 when I ordered my '23 model. Also that video linked above seems to talk about advanced features of the RDU which may not actually be true if it is an open diff relying on brake application to direct torque.

I get to test the AWD system and various modes frequently here in WNC. We get just enough snow in the mountains to matter, and my paved but curvy driveway climbs 175 vertical feet in just about 1/10 mile. Paving actually makes it more slippery, as you don't have the rough packed gravel base for traction.

I found that slippery mode is the most stable for just driving up and down a steep driveway with a coating of snow or icy spots. Other than that, not much to report, as I keep it in normal mode most of the time. In normal mode, going up a slippery driveway, there is slippage before the system corrects. In slippery mode, it never slips. It feels way more stable and reassuring.

Thx for the video but this is not how the awd system works in an xlt maverick. The fx4 maverick, in the video,is a more advanced system. Perhaps some similarities though?
I don't think so. This is from the 24 ordering guide. I don't see anything on a more advance system. They do offer an advanced AWD in the Tremor option though, but not available in the FX4 package. Only difference in gearing is with the 4k tow package gets a different gear ratio on the 2024. It does offer two different modes that remove traction control but it also removes eco and sport modes. The traction control can be shut off on any modes manually.

On the 25 they did away with those modes and it just has off road. Not sure if it disengages traction control or if it has to be disengaged manually. The 24 in mud and ruts a light comes on advising the driver that traction control is off. I've read similar on the web but personally have not had it in sand mode.

Can someone explain how the AWD system works?
So from what I can tell and experience it transfers power automatically when the tires are slipping does it in any drive mode it doesn't have to be in slippery if you put it on the dash cluster you can literally watch which tires are engaged I don't suggest it though I suggest you pay attention to the road 😉. As far as the difference between the FX4 all-wheel drive and the lower models there is none with the exception of the suspension and the skid plates the only model that has a different four wheel drive system is the Tremor (and I assume it can lock the rear so you're in four-wheel drive proper) not (all wheel drive)

The FX4 system is not more avanced.

It operates the same as your XLT Maverick.

I'm looking forward to adding the off-road screen and the 3 missing drive modes (off road, Mud/Ruts, and Sand) via Forscan.

Not sure if that's really necessary. Subject matter on Ford AWD system many say slippery mode without traction control if stuck. Edit in low.
