Currently working on an under seat "5lb" (~8-9lb gross) 3D printable fire extinguisher mount. I'll probably share the final version on my Printables account if anyone's interested.

There will be a driver and passenger side version. Might work on a mount for a 2.5lb as well.

These photos are of the first prototype. The revised version tweaks the geometry a bit, adds a second strap, and includes a feature to secure the hose (if your bottle has one).

Wouldn't it be better to have it somewhere else for easier access in case you need it? Under the rear seat is impossible with child seats, or people in the back seat.

Well sure, but this is a forum for the FITS anchors and the only one not under the seat is the one on back of the center console. I may design a 2.5lb bottle mount for that one in the future. Personally I prefer larger fire extinguishers in my vehicles, but I think a single FITS anchor might be too wimpy for a 5lb bottle.

I use to keep a fire extinguisher in my vehicles until one day the heat made it “explode”. More of a mess than an explosion but never the less I had a lot of clean up to do.

Appreciate your ingenuity and safety work. Your post has motivated others to offer some alternative storage and most likely has them at least thinking about keeping an extinguisher in their vehicle.

A 3d printed plastic mount is OK under the latched rear seat, where the extinguisher can't fly out during an impact / rollover situation.

Anywhere inside the cabin you need a mount made of ductile metal, which can't break and let the extinguisher bounce around inside the cabin in a crash. Porsche OEM and aftermarket extinguisher brackets are ALWAYS metal, and they bolt securely to the seat bracket or other hard mounting points.

Also a plastic bracket under the front seat could fail from the heat and let the extinguisher roll under the pedals, potentially causing a crash.

Definitely switch which side the handle is on. In an emergency I would want it close the door so I don't have to reach farther into vehicle. Ergonomics and such.

Could you get away with a wider single strap in the middle for simplicity? I'm not sure on the strength of the plastic. Would need to move the break or make it three pieces, though.

As for the hose, on the big trucks I just strap it in. Beats feeding the strap between the hose and bottle. Might save you some work.

Once you get settled on the bracket, see if you can modify the outriggers going to the FITS. Keep them low to use the walls of the bin as horizontal support (won't need to rely on the truss network) and then up to the FITS. May also give more space for other emergency items to be placed next to the extinguisher.

You are right to express concern about the durability of any fire extinguisher mount and that is one of the main reasons I designed this one for under the rear seat. If all else fails, it is at least contained under the seat. However, not all aftermarket mounts are metal. I have one in my Mustang that is made out of fiber-reinforced nylon that was manufacturer certified to 27G.

All good suggestions! The design of the mount is modular to the extent that you can mount the bottle in either orientation. User's choice. I just happened to mock it up with the handle toward the inside of the truck for these photos.

Also- I was actually considering a single, wider strap in the middle, but I happened to have this 1" wide stuff laying around. I may still do a single wide strap.

Part of the game I'm playing with the geometry is to keep it printable on a Bambu X1C. The truss section on the big end uses up the full build plate. I might be able to play with it a little to regain some of the storage space, though.

Was thinking the same thing. Fires double in size every minute or so, so an extinguisher under the back seat is already gonna eat up valuable time and then the extinguisher might not be sufficient to put out the fire.

Seems about as useful as the person that stowed a 2.5lb extinguisher in one of the bed cubbies. As someone who has had to discharge extinguishers on multiple occasions, dropping the tailgate, pushing anything out of the way, fumbling with the bed cubby door, and grabbing the extinguisher is gonna make that 2.5lb'er not very useful.

I kept it to only halotron extinguishers inside passenger compartments. A lot more expensive, but much easier to clean up.

For a real-world anecdote, I put out an engine fire with fire spray faster than someone could grab their 5-pound extinguisher from the toolbox in the bed of their truck. I want to say a significant reason for my success was because I keep the fire spray in the driver's bottle holder ready to go, so I was able to knock out the fire while it was small. Literally exited the car while holding the fire spray.

Bought 4 pack from Amazon "Fire Alert EZ Fire Extinguisher"....stored under the rear seats, very quick access to both...as I anticipated after a month both of them had tiny leaks that would have screwed up the carpet, but I put them in thick plastic bags before storing them. FYI: These little $15-20 fire extinguishers will only spray for 30 to 60 seconds and will not work on a big fire, just for stopping a fire that just started. The key to engine fires is don't raise the hood to allow more air in....just crack the hood and spray into the cracked opening to smother the fire....

First Alert EZ Fire Ext.... 4 for something like $40 from Amazon....but it's pretty common for them to leak....and screw up carpet or plastic. All the little spray cans are for small fires...before they get big.
