If you already have a spray-in, would you add a drop-in on top?

We’re seeing more builds running spray-in + drop-in together. And yeah, the first reaction is usually: “If I already paid for a spray-in, why add a drop-in—isn’t that wasting money?”

Short answer from a lot of real-world users: extra cushion, less rattle, better grip, and a sacrificial layer that keeps your spray-in from getting gouged when you chuck sharp or heavy stuff.

And we’ve been combing through pickup forums across models and the theme is consistent, check what they've said.

So here's the conclusion:
  1. Spray-ins are great and look clean, but they’re not perfect.
  2. Stacking a drop-in on top can solve specific pain points (noise, slide, impact).
Owners shared a ton of useful experiences—we figured it’s worth a proper poll here.
And...here comes our question:
If you already have a spray-in, would you add a drop-in on top?
• Yes — extra protection/grip is worth it
• Maybe — depends on price/fit/weight
• No — spray-in is enough
• Not sure — convince me in the comments

To make this useful and fun, we are hoping you can share your opinion down below this thread, and we are select one winner giving away 2 sets of bed mat to him/her or his/her friend from this forum

Here's the rule:
• Comment your take on spray-in + drop-in (real experience or what’s holding you back).
• @Tag one forum friend who’d have an opinion.
We’ll randomly pick one comment and send two bed mats — one to the commenter and one to the tagged friend.
• Multiple thoughtful comments = better odds, but one set max per person.

I’ve moved appliances and a mower deck,
Not a scratch on my spray in so far.
I’m good,
Always hated the drop in look.
Plus they raise the load an inch.

I use an additional mat on top of my factory spray-in, the mabett one actually. The main reason I use the mat is because the spray-in doesn't have enough traction to keep my hard plastic pelican case tool boxes from sliding around. I didn't actually think of the "benefit" of the additional layer of protection on top of the spray-in, however I suppose it probably does help. I have been using the mat since basically day 1, so I can't really comment on the durability of the spray in due to that.

Seems like overkill. SIBL with tonneau cover will keep bed in great shape.

The factory spray-in SUCKS, way to thin and doesn't cover enough area. IF I had a factory SIBL I would put a mat in it.

I have a Line-X SIBL and love it. Nice and thick with a lifetime warranty IF I do manage to gouge it.

I have SIBL and a bedrug (bed and tailgate only, not sides). mainly for mexico when we used two stadium seats to sit people back there in comfort on back country trips (boosting the Maverick seating capacity to 7)

I think the way to go is to forego both, beat the hell out of the bed (maybe some occasional rust protection) and install a drop in later before you sell it

I went factory on mine, spray in option, and a bed mat with Ford points. The mat for my knees and some extra anti-skid for heavy items.

Interesting.
I agree Line-X seems thicker.
What areas does the factory spray-in miss vs. Line-X ?

No do not get a drop in over spray-in. Though what I did do for extra protection is get the bed mat!

I prefer the spray-in. I think it's fine. It's served me very well. It's in great shape other than a scuff on the passenger side. But, the floor is completely mint thanks to the bed mat I transferred from my first one.

The drop-ins aren't as sturdy. They scratch and gouge more easily and aren't totally water tight. I've seen pickups where at the very end of the bed when the tailgate is open, there's an air gap underneath. They get badly warped over time as well.

That's why it's not uncommon to have trucks with drop-ins have a rusty bed underneath. All that water and debris from the elements just collects and wreaks havoc on the underside. Spray-ins solve that.
