Wonderful simplified explanation. If you have the time, watch this extensive video. This one actually shows the gear driven newer eCVT. The video posted above is the earlier Prius chain drive.
I am an engineer, and I still have a hard time wrapping my head around powertrains. It's pretty amazing what some people can do with a motor and transmission.I'll never feel more dumb than when an engineer explains things with perfect imagery and clear communication and I'm still lost.
His voice is almost as exciting as Ferris Bueller's teacher....Wonderful simplified explanation. If you have the time, watch this extensive video. This one actually shows the gear driven newer eCVT. The video posted above is the earlier Prius chain drive.
The transmission part of it sounds like it should be much more reliable than a traditional 8 or 10 speed automatic as the eCVT has so very few parts to it. One, and the only drawback that I can see is that a backyard mechanic will probably not want to swap out the starter/generator motor as it is an integral part of the transmission and a little more difficult to remove and replace compared to a traditional ICE/starter or alternator. So my take away is Ford has been perfecting this system since 2005 so it’s is proven and I can get 40mpg in the city without worrying about it failing.
True, because that starter/generator is inside the transmission housing. The transmission part of it sounds like it should be much more reliable than a traditional 8 or 10 speed automatic as the eCVT has so very few parts to it. There’s not much to go wrong. I can’t imagine it being unreliable. Literally 2 electric motors and a planetary gear set. Much less to go wrong than a traditional auto or regular cvt trans.I think the hybrid transmission has been very reliable in the Prius, does anyone know about Ford's reliability?
There is a bearing issue in 2013-August 2015 C-Max, but once fixed, reliability has been great. Why did it take so long? The bearing was good for 100K miles.....does anyone know about Ford's reliability?
Civil engineer, here. Once things start moving and rotating, I'm also lost. lolI am an engineer, and I still have a hard time wrapping my head around powertrains. It's pretty amazing what some people can do with a motor and transmission.
