The big rub there is that 30% hit in the eyes of any insurance company, regardless of what you actually pay for the vehicle. It means the value is going to be that much lower in determining if it gets declared totaled and the payout in the case that it does.
I'm dealing with getting a total loss replacement right now so, that factor is front and center.

Ask them for an OASIS report. It is Ford's service software program that all Ford service bays use and input repairs.

From Google AI search:

Ford OASIS Vehicle Report
    • What it is: An online automotive report tracking original warranty repairs, factory recalls, service campaigns, and vehicle specifications using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). [1, 2]
    • How to get it: These reports are restricted and not public; they can only be pulled and printed by an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealership service advisor, often upon request. [1, 2]
    • What it lacks: It generally does not show routine maintenance or non-warranty repairs performed at independent repair shops. [1, 2]
I got that on my last one but, didn't know what it was called. Luckily it was regularly serviced at dealerships.

Since you are asking for our opinion, you already have questions about clean titles. Insuring, trade in, etc. will haunt you as long as you own it. Keep shopping for a truck with clean history.
I wanted to drive mine to death anyway. I hate buying cars. I was basically harassed into buying my 1st Mav, after having my previous vehicle for 14 years. It still drove but, was time. The upgrade was nice. I don't do dealer trade ins. They offer $250 when $3,500 is an easy private sale.

Feeling Lucky?
At the very least, make a ridiculously low offer.
If it’s been sitting this long, he may be anxious.
This. Really. I have the option to lowball the F out of them. I strongly considered, in my last reply to the dealer deflecting the report, "It seems like you really don't want to sell this truck." Before we knew about the Lemon part, the assumption was the Dealer's local demographic... Rural poor and and failing farms in the south. Data centers don't buy cars.

Japanese cars typically hold their value pretty well and i think it was 86k miles. Reliable and will likely go for 200k+ if well cared for. It was a Mazda but, technically a Ford.

Reason enough to walk away right there. If you're expected to pay the same for it as an un-lemoned version, then you deserve to know why they think it is worth that. If they can't even supply that, what else will they not share?

I'm partial to Area 51s, but as they say, there are plenty of fish in the sea. You should have no trouble finding one that isn't damaged goods. Good luck.
There was another one I was looking at but, the 500 mile distance to a non-ford dealer is not ideal. This one is only 200 miles away and I can probably get the dealer to drive it up here... If it's for 1k miles since the repair, it should be set.

I said it's standard that I expect an official report when I buy a car. I'll wait on that.
So you have to wait until you buy the truck to find out what problems it had?

He only mentioned the 1yr/12k Mile warranty on the specified issues. I have to assume it's still under the 60k mile warranty but, I'd need to be sure. And they need to come down on the ask and offer extended warranty for free.

I want the vehicle history report, mostly because I want to see the recalls list. My last Mav had the Long block replacement to 120k or 2032 so, it felt like engine failure was sufficiently warrantied for free.
If you have the VIN you should go look recalls up yourself.

Kind of like our Congress ... "we won't know what's in the bill until we pass it"

Lol no. I want the reports first... I did get a "report" from the sales guy... A scanned black and white print out of an experian webpage, with faded text that says, "click here to view the report." ... I'm starting to think he is just mentally challenged.

Not sure what state of the union you're in but typically, in order to sell a lemon law vehicle:
"The manufacturer and any subsequent dealer selling the car must provide the new buyer with a written disclosure statement. This document must be signed by the buyer and describe the nonconformity that led to the buyback. Additionally, the manufacturer must affix a decal to the vehicle, typically on the driver's side door jamb, which clearly states it is a Lemon Law Buyback and identifies the specific defect(s)."

You can lowball an offer, but if the problem has not been adequately resolved, you may be buying a headache instead of a vehicle.

Typically, a branded title can be up to a 40% discounted price compared to the same vehicle with a clean title.

That doesn't mean the dealership has to discount the price.
They may be waiting for somebody who needs to buy a vowel to spell cat.

Regardless, if the vehicle is purchased, any insurance company is likely to discount the car value considerably in the event the vehicle is totaled.

It might be beneficial to contact your insurance agent and see what their valuation would be, based on the VIN number and lemon title.

You could use that as a negotiating tool if the truck doesn't have an issue that may be unresolved, and the defect was a problem you are willing to risk, and the dealer takes an appropriate offer based on the vehicle's value.

Right now it seems like there are too many unknowns to make a rational decision.
Good luck.
