Winter tires on a hybrid?

The Maverick is my gas-guzzling second car, so I don't drive it a lot. Coming up on two years of ownership, I have about 13,000 miles on it, including a 5000+ mile trip. Very few of those miles are winter miles.

I am a fan of snow tires, I think they make a significant difference. That said, I have run the Maverick hybrid for two winters so far on the factory tires, without problem. The Continentals are not terrible.

But if it were my everyday driver, I'd have snows in the winter.

Like some of the post have said the Continentals are pure garbage I have XLT Hybrid and put a set of Wild Peaks from another member off his Maverick ECO FX4 they are 235/65/17s . I live in North Tn last year we had a bad winter Snow ,Ice , temps down to - 28 wind chill . I live in the middle of no wear no snow plows up hill down hill lot of curves. My Maverick with those tires went everywhere I needed to go no problems. BUT REMEMBER the tires and vehicle are only a small part of the equation its the driver that is the NUT that holds the wheel . If you don't know how to drive on bad roads stay the HELL off them

The answer is yes. I’d recommend getting dedicated snow tires. If it was an AWD Maverick you could possibly get away with all weathers. Proper snow tires are a make it or brake it situation in a snow storm. I say this as live near the Canadian border in VT.

I have a set of Bridgestone blizzacks for my hybrid for the winter. With proper snow tires you’ll do better then some guy with an AWD maverick on his stock continentals.

please consider as I don’t want to be the guy behind you on the road with your stock tires in a snow squall

Can not truthfully tell you I bought them from a club member in Huntsville AL. Before I got my Maverick. I put them on like a week later and got rid of those crappy Continentals those tires are pure Garbage. But I have always got between 38 and 44 miles to the gallons with them . I love those tires . I have them on my wife's Jeep Cherokee and my Chevy Silverado Z71. Also. . I don't play with Vehicle Safety whether it's my wife or my daughters or myself . There is times when I need to travel WAY beyond the Speed Limit on very crappy back country roads and I trust these tires for the handling , grip , traction and breaking I need on these roads .. Hope this helps you make your decision.

wife’s outback has those. They are excellent on a Subaru. But on a FWD I’d probably still go with a dedicated snow tire

I considered the Cross Climates too, but they are still not dedicated snow's so I'm likely going with some X-Ice snow's. $800 right now at Discount (with discounts). If you are looking for good all year ones and not A/T's, I'd go with the Cross Climates. I already have KO2's on but tbh, I don't trust them for the winter. First and last time with the KO2's.

The Toyo Celsius CUV tires that are a "4-season tire" competitor to the CrossClimate also look good. A bit more traditional tread style than the full chevrons of the CC. Trying a set on one of our work Tahoes this winter. Already held up pretty decent as far as wear on their summer driving.

Another vote for Michelin CrossClimate2. I live in Michigan and my driveway is gravel and uphill. I have always bought winter tires and dedicated wheels, but I'm sick of changing wheels on all of our vehicles twice per year. I heard good things about the CC2 so, when my wife needed new tires, we opted for those. I really couldn't believe how good they were in the snow so I bought them for my Mavericks and haven't looked back.

It depends on the type of Michelin tire. I also have michelin's on my mav, but they are all seasons and low resistance (lariat ybrid w/ lux package). Living in Vermont, I would not trust them, or me in the snow.

I get a set of Michelin X-Ice tires and have them mounted on some steel rims from another Mav owner. I had the same tires on my last car and they were incredible in the snow.

I have the Wild Peak A/T Trails on my Hybrid. Getting mid 40s in mixed town/highway/very hilly driving. They seem to ride ever so slightly rougher than the Continentals, but not much. Road noise is not noticeably worse, either. I would buy them again.

Almost any tire will be grippier and better than the Pro Contact TX. Problem is your WP A/T Trails weigh 31 lbs and the CPC TX weigh 24 lbs. That heavy tire is going to wear out the suspension sooner over time. Perhaps I'm wrong but that's my story.

I'm running the OEM tire in summer and the 28 lbs Michilin X ICE in winter (3 months). When the OEM CPC TX tire wears out, I'll buy it again.
