Back in February I posted a question about wheel offset - specifically, using a 52mm offset steel wheel for winter tires when the factory wheels are 37.5mm. I've had these wheels/tires for over a year having bought them in anticipation of getting my Maverick a lot sooner than I actually did (had a VIN# and production date but got cancelled). The Mav is a Lariat hybrid. I went with 17" wheels/tires from Tire Rack.

I got essentially no responses to the question, so I'll post it again 9-10 months later to see if anyone can offer help.

I'm trying to figure out if the 17' wheels with the 52 offset will clear the brake calipers and the wheel struts. Tire Rack said they would fit, but I'm not 100% convinced since I haven't put them on the Mav as yet. Winter's coming and I'd like to get a definitive answer.

So the question: is anyone running 17" wheels with a 52 offset on your Mav? Thanks for your insight.

I am not running that set up, but there are several on this forum that have Focus wheels that are 52et.
I have 18" Mustang Mach-E wheels that are 47.5 et and they work great.

Thanks for the response - saw those posts. My biggest concern is the combination of 17" wheel diameter and 52mm offset. Pretty sure 18" wheels would be okay, but not sure about the 17"s.

The diameter has no bearing really on offset. Wheel width plays a big part. If you're going to use Ford wheels with a 52mm offset and the same 7" width as the stock wheels with a 37.5mm offset the outer lip of your wheel is going to be tucked in to the wheel well by almost an inch. Some don't care, others think it looks silly. Functionally it'll work.

If your new wheels are the same diameter and width as the factory wheels and the only difference is the offset then the new wheels will sit 14mm farther in

Here’s a visualization of what that looks like. The green outline is the new wheel with the 52 offset, again assuming all else equal

If the question then becomes, does a rim which sticks inward an inch beyond stock fit ok?...

On my XL, I went to a 19x8" wheel with a 52.5mm offset. This new wheel is about an inch wider, and pretty much that full inch sticks inward beyond what the stock wheel did. Inboard clearance is just fine, front and rear, even with my use of a tire with the "rim protect" feature. In my experience, the sidewall of the tire on those often sticks out from the rim a bit further. Still fine on my Mav. Disclaimer - I did go to a Silver's suspension at the same time which may have slightly different diameter shock body than stock did, but it doesn't look to be much of a difference.

If you want to see the wheels & suspension look like on the vehicle, click the build link in my signature.

Most people will not like how this looks on a modern vehicle.
