So I have the Lariat with Navigation. The navigation screen shows the speed limit sign. I know the truck has the ability for Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) it's just off in instrument cluster.

So my question is what is this speed based on? Is it TSR, or the speed preloaded in the map (or another source)? I couldn't find this answer anywhere. Haven't been able to test it out yet, figured someone may know. This would impact how reliable it is.

There's been talk. Most saying it reads the sign and displays what it reads while others say it relies on the nav data and just updates based on new signage. XL/XLT owners who have done the TSR mod do not have built-in navigation and so shouldn't have speed sign data, meaning the camera is recognizing and displaying it live. Not sure if there is any concrete evidence at this point one way or the other

The speed limit info is preloaded into the maps. TSR and IACC (Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control) use the map info as supplimental information when set up to do so.

Would be interesting to see if anyone with a Lariat is willing to use Forscan to query the settings and see if TSR is already active for that trim.

(AFAIK) TSR is disabled for all trims regardless, it must be activated via Forscan for any Maverick at this point in time - no Maverick comes with TSR enabled from factory

So as a little experiment at lunch, was checking this to see what I can figure out. So going down a small back road, no data but also not pass a sign. Inconclusive.

On to an access road, and immediately it pops up the 50 mph sign before (as far as I saw) I passed a sign. Leans towards the navigation.

But on that same road the speed changed to 45 mph. As soon as I was next to the sign, it changed on my screen. It was very similar to vehicles with TSR. I get it could have been from GPS data but that exact seems suspect.

This lends to what @Maverick2022XL said, that it pulls from navigation and supplements with sign recognition. I'll keep an eye on it some see if anything else shows up I can draw conclusions from.

I'd lean into this explanation of "Nav+TSR supplement" with complete and total speculation in two areas: Ford's liability and long term digital strategy.

Liability is probably not a big concern due to myriad disclaimers in the owners manual about driver responsibility. Nonetheless, if the vehicle ever shows inaccurate signage (particularly any that conflicts with what's on the road) it's just not a position Ford would like to be in. Hence, if the vehicle sees a sign that might override the Nav info - I suspect it always prefers the one from the road.

As for long term digital strategy - if it were me, I'd have every Ford vehicle that could recognize signs doing so and reporting that info back to Ford regardless of whether or not the TSR readings were actually shown to the driver. There are a number of ways it could be used to help keep Ford's overall digital position current and competitive.

I agree, especially considering people won't always update their map data. Also considering the technology is already on the truck. I would think Ford would prefer to ensure the most accurate available data is shown. I can lean into conspiracy theories sometimes... But to me if bad is shown to the driver, and the technology was there to be more accurate but just turned off... This is potential class action law suit realm.

It's one thing to provide no data, another completely to provide bad data when it would take virtually nothing but a software update to make it correct.

My wife's Impala gets the info from the map data - I know because a map data update corrected a speed limit where the rural road used to be 55 mph, but changed to 40 mph when they built a subdivision. Prior to the data update, the gps map always reported the speed limit as 55 mph. After the update, it correctly showed 40.

Both Apple Maps and Google Maps use the map's data for speed limits, and I strongly suspect the Ford Nav does the same.
