On buying parts at a dealer: I wouldn't recommend it. Get a quote, make sure you have the right part, then look online. You'll save yourself money 9 times out of 10.
Thanks for this. I was thinking about jacking up my FX4 to see if the canister was protected by the shield.

If you can get the right Motorcraft part number and buy it online you are getting an OEM part.

Some of the Dorman stuff can be a bit iffy. I would buy Dorman for jobs at the Ford Fleet Center I worked at when Ford had parts on forever back order.

That's kinda scary, and there is a lot more vunerable 'stuff' under the hybrid:


yes, there are a lot of low hanging giblets and nothing to protect them but one's imagination. Quite a few others have also found this out the hard and expensive way.

I haven't been able to bring myself to paying Ford $750 to do this repair yet. This felt skid plate is a joke. Somebody please stamp some out of steel or sell us some rock sliders.
I'm going to try the fiberglass method of plugging too. I hope I can get the mounting tab back on their well enough to hold it for the foreseeable future.

Parts Dept. gave me PN LX6Z9D653F $459 for the evap canister
and LX6Z6775R $97.17 for the "under shield".
Service Dept. gave me PN NZ6Z 9D289 A $207 for the evap canister and PN NZ6Z 9B007 AA $45 for the "under shield".

Why the difference?

Service department wants $725 for evap canister replacement and $200 for under shield replacement.

O'Reily's website says they're $269 and special order...

I took the Motorcraft number you got from O'Reillys and got a link to RockAuto for the same part for $235.79. They even show the Ford part number which matches the number you got from the Ford parts department.

funny thing is the evap on my F150 is in almost exactly the same location with not even a felt cover. made it easy to get at to repair mouse damage, threw an emissions code and I couldn't get new plates. once I repaired the wires it took 2 days before it would take a reset.

@davew, if you truck isn't throwing a code patch it if you can

Not really since the proper word in this case is 'vulnerable'.

Found a replacement on eBay with the same part number for a “Lincoln Corsair”. The photos look the same. For $190, I’m going to give it a shot. My understanding is that fiberglass won’t permanently or chemically bond to the plastic Evap canister. It will just stick to it like a clamp or glue that will eventually rattle free. Once it does the check engine light will come on again.
I might try some stitching/sewing and/or adhesive on the felt cover though. That thing needs to be steel asap.
