Agree with the comment about trying your local stereo shop. They wire stereos, radar detectors, GPS, sound processors, dash cams, rear seat video entertainment, etc. they will probably do a cleaner install compared to uhaul or you typical offroad parts shop and wiring is nothing new to them. I also agree that you should absolutely get the brake controller since the trailer has brakes. One emergency stop without the brakes hooked up could be a life changing event.

I just had something interesting happened.

I called U-Haul to schedule adding a 7pin trailer connector to my 2024 XL Maverick Hybrid, and they cancelled it the day of install. They cancelled it because my vehicle is under warranty, because they don't work on vehicles under warranty.
Use a Curt echo. It hooks up with the 4 pin and brake functions through your phone (4 pin plugs into 7 pin mount and echo plugs into that). I had one on my Audi and it works well. In fact, I still have it laying around someplace. They run a little under $300 and if you're interested, I'll sell you mine for $125.

Appreciate the offer! As of today I'm having the adopter installed. One of the functions I want is charging my trailer.

For you boat owners out there, what happens to your trailer tail lamps that get submerged?
Most boat trailers today are sold with waterproof light assemblies that can tolerate being submerged, but I still un-plug mine before launching/retrieving. After 45+ years, old habits are hard to break.

Try your Ford dealership? I am speculating here, with the four pin connector you can’t hook up anything too heavy ie. more than 2000 lbs. Bigger trailers (and bigger loads) require the seven pin connector.
With a hybrid one could use the electric braking of the engine no? Thoughts folks?

The electric regenerative braking is good for about 1 mile of downhill. The small battery fills up fast.

Thereafter, the truck still generates, then uses the electrical power to spin the engine without fuel, basically like spinning an air compressor for resistance.

It's actually pretty good. I've found it quite useful.

I'd look at this as a blessing. I wouldn't let U-Haul install anything lol.

Now that you have it ready to use, stop at any truck stop and go across the CAT scales to weigh it.
That is the ONLY way to know where you are with weight distribution and gross weights!

The pins / connector has nothing to do with the tow rating.

Some states REQUIRE trailer brakes at 1500 lbs. Most, right at 2000 lbs. A few, higher than this.

2 states I think no regulation at all.

You can do it and you can do it without voiding your warranty. But it is not that simple and probably why U-haul balked at it. Also there is probably no set of directions for doing it and do you really want U-haul making it up as they go?
5 states require Trailer brakes at only 1,500#. Only 2 states require at 2,000#. The rest are all 3,000# or higher.
