I've needed to open the tailgate THEN lock the truck when I was using it a bunch (doing a lot of driving around cutting trees after Hurricane Helene).

Nope, but you can manually unlock it with your key.

I've needed to open the tailgate THEN lock the truck when I was using it a bunch (doing a lot of driving around cutting trees after Hurricane Helene).

There are two options for this situation
1. Lock the truck using the button on the door. Use the key IN or ON your FOB to unlock the tailgate. This would be the method you would use if you wanted to access your tailgate multiple times. You can also drive with the tailgate open.
2. Drop the tailgate. Lock the truck from the door or your key fob. The tailgate will remain locked and will be locked when you close it. Then use your key to unlock it if you don't want to open the truck.

That's what I do, on the occasion I need the tailgate open but the truck locked.

Ironically, mine was never plugged in from the factory. Had to do it myself when I noticed it wasn't locking.

I have gotten used to the tailgate lock. I initially didn't see much reason for it, but now I use it daily. In another post I describe my using an old ice chest for bed storage. Basically, the tailgate closes against the chest, keeping the chest latches inoperable. With the gate locked the chest contents are secure.
