I actually wore out a drop in K&N
I properly cleaned and correctly oiled it only when it was needed. That was about every 50,000 miles.
At 320,000 on my Tacoma I suddenly started loosing power. The filter had been cleaned and lubed about 15,000 miles prior.
I limped into an auto parts store a got a stock type paper filter, a Fram.
Power was instantly restored.
After re cleaning and re oiling the K&N and re installing it my power went down again instantly.
I threw the thing out.

My Red Neck cost analysis:
320,000 miles on one $50 K&N filter and three cleaning kits at about $22 each.
Bout a buck twenty five over the 320,000 miles.

Fram filters were at the time $15 at Walmart.
12 filters each changed out at 25,000 intervals with no noticeable loss in performance or mpg’s over the life of the paper filters.
12 filters times $16 tax included
Worked out to about $195

So !
The K&N’s with the cleaning kits that did a couple of cleanings per kit with lots of oil left over after the cleaner ran out saved me about $75

Stay with me, almost done.

To save that $75 I had to spend two freakin hours each time I cleaned it and it was a bit messy.
Surgical gloves to keep the chems out of my liver.
Rags to wipe things out,
Most of the time was waiting for the dang filter to dry.
I was a busy man that was going to die one day.
I had far better things I could do with those hours.

Fram filters,
purchase,
Head to the local self service car wash
Open the hood,
Toss the old filter,
Vacuum out the air box below the filter,
Drop in the new one,

Haul ass down the road.

You can keep your gauze racing filter.

Ya, I think the ā€˜million mile warranty’ is B.S.

The problem is not the k&n, it's the turbo making the spooling sound. Remove the turbo. It just uses too much fuel anyway.

It isn't in my experience.

Years ago when I used them, I had a K&N replacement panel filter that had developed cracks in the silicone frame at 100,000 miles that eventually would have come apart. I contacted K&N via email with a description of the issue. They asked for the model number and immediately shipped me a new filter, no other questions asked.

I still use K&N cone filters with waterproof pre-filters on some applications. The pre-filters dramatically reduce the dust build-up on the filter for very simple maintenance. On a daily driver like the Maverick it's best to use stock paper filters for their efficiency and less maintenance hassle, IMO.

As to the comments about damage to sensors on modern vehicles I agree with you @Meeka; that only happens if you over-oil the filter. If oiling a filter correctly is too difficult for you, you're better off using a paper filter. Even better, let a mechanic service your vehicle for you.

To the O.P.: In every case where I've used a K&N stock replacement filter, it damped the intake sound less than the OEM filter and could be heard more easily.

last month I changed air filter on 22 2.0 lariat maverick from stock air filter to a regular k and n. No after market intake. Just stock to k and n. Now I have a sound of the turbo spooling up when I accelerate. Any ideas or just what happens when you have a clean filter?

Never heard any spooling up noise when our maverick was new. So does that mean fords filter is restrictive? Maybe the k&n will give you a few extra hp?

K&N filters are not a good option for modern vehicles. You'll get no increase in horsepower/torque, and can even harm the sensors.
I've had one in my ram for 15 years with no issues, or maybe that isn't modern enough?

The K&N gauze filter media is made of super lightweight gauze fibers.
That’s how they pass more air with lesser suction than a stock filter. Thats why it needs oil. You can hear more noise through it.
Your vehicle decides how much air it needs and maintains the proper air/fuel mixture.
If the K&N passes twice the air volume or more velocity due to its free’er flow design your fuel system simply throttles back first with the air gate.
The drop in K&N filter alone serves no purpose but to get some money out of your wallet.
You’d have to re tune your fuel air system to get any benefit from the K&N
I guess that is why if you install a CAI it tells you to leave the battery disconnected for 2 hours so the computer has to relearn the increase in air volume.

The turbo sound is cool. Just wondering if anybody has the same experience. I have always put them in all my cars. Especially because of the dirt road and mud of the Everglades. I imagine most people don’t off-road in mavericks. But I do and the fx4 package does the trick just awesome. It pulls my boat awesomely up and down the grave ramp.

K & N the only way to go. I have been using K & N on every car, truck, race cars and go-kart's I race. The last air filter you will ever buy and helps fuel economy. THE BEST

They are great for extended filter life (with maintenance) and air flow performance. However, they're not great at filtering efficiency. Their efficiency may be around 96% vs a paper filter at 99% and that doesn't seem like a huge difference until you realize that difference indicates that they let three times as much dirt into the engine as a paper filter.

Here's an independent test if you care to compare: https://www.project200.com.au/dm-iso5011/

My manual says to never put spare air filters under rear seat 🤣
you can't seriously be asking us to believe that someone read the manual, can you?
