I actually wore out a drop in K&N
I properly cleaned and correctly oiled it only when it was needed. That was about every 50,000 miles.
At 320,000 on my Tacoma I suddenly started loosing power. The filter had been cleaned and lubed about 15,000 miles prior.
I limped into an auto parts store a got a stock type paper filter, a Fram.
Power was instantly restored.
After re cleaning and re oiling the K&N and re installing it my power went down again instantly.
I threw the thing out.
My Red Neck cost analysis:
320,000 miles on one $50 K&N filter and three cleaning kits at about $22 each.
Bout a buck twenty five over the 320,000 miles.
Fram filters were at the time $15 at Walmart.
12 filters each changed out at 25,000 intervals with no noticeable loss in performance or mpgās over the life of the paper filters.
12 filters times $16 tax included
Worked out to about $195
So !
The K&Nās with the cleaning kits that did a couple of cleanings per kit with lots of oil left over after the cleaner ran out saved me about $75
Stay with me, almost done.
To save that $75 I had to spend two freakin hours each time I cleaned it and it was a bit messy.
Surgical gloves to keep the chems out of my liver.
Rags to wipe things out,
Most of the time was waiting for the dang filter to dry.
I was a busy man that was going to die one day.
I had far better things I could do with those hours.
Fram filters,
purchase,
Head to the local self service car wash
Open the hood,
Toss the old filter,
Vacuum out the air box below the filter,
Drop in the new one,
Haul ass down the road.
You can keep your gauze racing filter.
