Interesting. I am a little surprised that this cannot be updated over the air, and probably even more surprised that I don't see a sync3 update when I look in my garage on Ford.com.

Weird to me to have something that can be fixed via APIM update, but not via a Sync3 OTA update. Unless, of course, they're just slow and the OTA update isn't available yet.. but that's not what this TSB says, it indicates a manual APIM update by a Ford dealership.

Says I'm current:

SYNC GenerationSYNC 3

SYNC Version3.4.23188

The OTA update caused many of these issues...........Mine was perfect until the OTA failed. I find it unlikely the root cause of the problem is the correction. Dealer updated the software and fixed the issues under warranty.

Good questions.

I can only speak from my experience. I had 3.4.22251 and was experiencing some of the issues in the list. I could not update via OTA to 3.4.23188, but was able via other means.

I have not had any issues with 3.4.23188. My understanding was this was the most recent version available. The information I found above doesn't say what version they're updating it to, so I'm not sure if there's now another more recent version or if they are just updating it to 3.4.23188.

I've definitely experienced slow/lagging operation and loss of bluetooth connectivity, particularly on longer trips when navigating via Google Maps and playing music via Spotify.

Generally I resolve this via rebooting the sync3 system by holding power and skip forward. I would be interested in doing this update to see if it makes the system more stable and faster. "slow/lagging operation" is very generic and some of the things in that list are very specific, and I don't have those issues.

23188 is the current and yet it still cannot follow a playlist
You can do off of a usb drive, took less than 10 minutes for mine.

if your playlist is long, shorten it. many people complain about being able to search through folders with hundreds of items, or index 5k+ songs and then play all. sync3 just does not have the horsepower to do that.

yes, I realize 23188 is the latest; it was released in september 2023. this tsb is apparently not a sync update, but a reflash of the whole APIM.

I created a drive with an audio book that was <100 files and it still cannot handle it.
I have given up on audio books i guess. I will put them on my ancient mp3 player and leave that in the car when the temps get below 100 again.

I wasn't going to share this story, as I felt pretty dumb after I did it, but maybe it'll help keep somebody else from making the same mistake I did;

A couple months back, I was unable to successfully update my sync 3 from 22251 to 23188 using the OTA process. I talked with Ford who recommended I have the dealer update it for me. I called the dealer and they told me it would be 3 weeks before they could get it in and I would have to leave it for the day.

I did some online searching and found this site: https://cyanlabs.net/

I am not computer saavy, but thought I'd try updating my Sync 3 myself. Well, that was a mistake. I "bricked" my APIM because I didn't know what I was doing and wasn't careful.

I then contacted this company, who can "unbrick" an APIM and update it to the latest files. https://naviupgrade.com/shop/hardware/sync-3-apim-module-unbricking-service/

It cost me $200, a couple weeks of no infotainment system and alot of work wrestling the APIM out of the dash and back in. I didn't get all the other stuff added to the APIM, I just wanted it back to stock.

It works great now, but I wouldn't recommend anyone else take the path I did. In hindsight, I should just have waited and let Ford work on it.

Live and learn. ;)
