My original choice was a straight piece of 2x10 but on the first attempt to place a box of material on the back end there wasn't enough space between the board and the tailgate. Cut the ends off, added a spacer to move the mail portion of board forward. All works well now.

Good design it looks nice.
I also found the little 15" of room between the tailgate and the 2x6 to be inadequate.
I also tried the ratchet bar and found that stuff either rolled underneath it or went over the top. That's when I came up with my pull-out tray.
