For giggles I got a Carvana quote on our 2017 jetta with 58k miles. Quote was for $13,100. We paid $13,900 OUT-THE-DOOR (thanks Dieselgate) in October 2016. It's our only car until the Maverick comes and we'll likely keep it.

I took a different route (not great)
A few months ago I was considering selling my 2011 Honda Pilot to get the down for the Maverick. One afternoon my son was driving it and someone ran a red light and totaled it. I thought the most I may get via selling it was about $12K, especially since I paid $15K 3 1/2 years ago. Well my insurance company valued it at $15.2K, plus they paid me the sales tax and it was up to $16.3K.
My Maverick went from a reasonable XLT to a loaded Lariat.
BTW everyone involved in the accident was fine, my Honda did deploy a shit-ton of airbags though.
I guess it worked out, you never know.

My truck is getting built in two weeks. I totaled my car last week..so carless but we will see what insurance gives me as I know it was going to be more then what the trade in was going to be.

A couple years ago I went on Carvana and got a quote for my 2003 Chevy Avalanche and they only offered $600. I ended up selling it for $5,000. Carvana was a lot higher on my Trax. They definitely prefer the newer lower mileage cars.

Surprised to see how many folks had their best offer from Carvana, they’ve consistently been the lowest on my vehicle and Carmax has been the highest.

Maybe Carvana just doesn’t like projects though; my 2017 Escape is relatively new, decent miles (47k) and for the most part, in great condition. Unfortunately, Ford didn’t just start having issues painting vehicles with the Maverick, my Escape (like many others that year), had terrible prep and paint, so it needs paint in a few panels.
I really hope dealer will come close to the Carmax offers when the time comes so I don’t have to hassle with another transaction and addtl sales tax but I’m not too optimistic.

Carmax was only $300 more than Carvana but the nearest Carmax to me is about 3 hours away.

So far, for me, Carmax has given me the highest offer for my 08 Frontier with about 138,000 miles. Vroom and Carvana were both around 5200 whereas carmax was just about 7000. If I had a build date, I probably would have jumped on that one. My question is how many games would they play to try and lower their offer once I got to a carmax for them to look it over.

Yes, yes, good… now where do we start the line for the hopeful buyers of my 2003 Accord with 212k miles? The bidding will start at $5,000
Seriously. I have a 2010 Ford Flex with 134k miles that seems to be worth $4k according to KBB. But I see them advertised for $8-12k in the classifieds. I have no idea how much I'll actually get, but I'm hoping all of the people who can't afford the new cars at 15-30k will be excited to buy mine. I just know that despite the engine and drivetrain being in excellent condition, the slight hail damage makes it unsellable to dealers, carmax, carvana, etc.

Vroom offer = $6k in equity
Carvana offer = $5k in equity
Dealership original offer = $2,500 in equity (+1800 tax credit).

Considered Car Max, but never scheduled an appointment.

Scheduled an in person appraisal at the dealership, and their written offer increased to $4500 + $1800 tax credit. They knew their original offer was a low ball offer, and I was prepared to support my claim for a higher trade in amount.

I saved the Carvana and Vroom offers, just in case because my delivery date is 11/1-7.

Once I had a build week (November) I checked my 2016 F-150 Lariat's value with Vroom (Texas Direct), CarMax, and AutoNation - all in the Houston area. Vroom and AutoNation sent within range offers in the 36K range. CarMax wanted an in person visit and I had an appt. scheduled. My local dealership where I placed the order was 3K less than Vroom and AutoNation and they wouldn't go up. Since AutoNation is closer to me I drove there, settled on $36,590 and went home with a check to purchase the new Maverick. My F-150 was in excellent shape, loaded, and under 50K miles. Overall, happy with the process with AutoNation. My advice is to have your vehicle clean and be ready to tell them what you want and expect for a price. After reading the reply's I should have checked Carvana! Good luck with your current vehicle selling journey!

Carvana beat any local offer for my 2015 Prius 4 and paid me $17K or $18K (can't remember the exact number). I paid under $16K a few months prior.

The local Nissan dealership paid me $44K for my 2021 Civic Type R. I paid $40K for it two months prior. The local Honda dealership wouldn't even give me an offer on it and Carvana at the time offered be $36K.

Shop around, your results will vary. Carvana and other companies like them will probably overpay to keep used car inventory from dealerships.

I sold mine to Carvana for $22,000 and still used the tax credit on the new truck in Missouri.

Is that a Missouri thing only?
Is there a time limit between selling and buying?

Any Texan's here want to way in: are we able to do the same "sell to Carvana and get sales tax off of new purchase"?

EDIT: Answered my own question: NO

Motor vehicle tax cannot be reduced by the proceeds of a private-party sale or the sale to a different dealer of a motor vehicle that could have been used as a trade-in.

In Missouri you just need a Bill Of Sale and you have 180 Days to use it I would check with your Texas DMV.

Just did thanks. Answer is NO for Texas

We sold both of our cars to local dealers in the last month due to the high prices being offered. I used KBB and Edmunds to value the vehicles and I started getting inquires from dealers saying they would meet or beat whatever Carmax would offer..

My 2017 GMC Canyon with 41,300 miles brought $30,500.
I ordered my Maverick Lariat Hybrid FE a short time later. I am now without a car to drive and really hope I do get my build within the 3 - 4 months that Granger Ford quoted me. I ordered in October and know I have to wait, but it sure makes to tougher to wait when you no longer have a car to drive. I am thinking of changing from a First Edition in order to eliminate that as a possible constraint. I would still want the moonroof though. Does anyone know if the FE is held up for any reason?

We also sold our leased Honda CR-V that had 1 year left on the lease. There were just over 40,000 miles on it. We had to first pay-off the lease and get a title in our name so it was ours to sell, but we ended up with a nice check for $30,700. This is really a good time to sell a used car.
