Have a scheduled build date of 12/12 and delivery ETA of 1/11-1/17. Let’s ASSUME that all holds true. What is everyone’s experience with dealerships valuing their trade in vehicle since they hold all the leverage with the Maverick and know you can't go down the street to get another one? Are you seeing fair offers for your trade? Are you selling to Carvana, Carmax, etc... prior? Appreciate everyone's insight and own experience with their Maverick purchase.

It is all over the map. I did some estimates 2 weeks ago with Carvana, Vroom, and CarMax and they ranged from 15k to 21k on my current vehicle. Go into your dealer armed with your best offerers in case they try to low ball you. They will likely come up.

they hold all the cards with the Maverick, but decent used car prices are really high at the moment. I wasn't "low ball offered" on my trade, but told them no thanks, I would sell it outright myself, and the offer increased to what I paid them for it three years earlier. and then they sold it within two weeks for like $5k more than that.

Old vehicle was a 2013 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 w/ V6 and 6-speed manual. 52K miles, mint.
The day I was going to start delivery with my ford dealer I got a Carvana quote for $22,000. I went into the dealer with that, let them know that was the number to beat, and they appraised it at $17,500. I countered and they came back at $19,000, but even factoring the tax savings it made more sense to take Carvana's offer. The dealer was cool about it, Carvana was super easy to deal with. I probably could have gotten a bit more selling it privately but I really didn't feel like spending the time doing that and dealing with tire-kickers and questionable payment issues.

I had an old Honda in poor condition. Carvana offered me $1100. Maverick dealer offered me a $1000 so I just traded it. Less work for me.

I will be selling my C-max to Carvana, carfax or Vroom when my truck comes in later this month. The dealership offered me $3,250 for trade in when I ordered the truck in Dec. 2021. Trade in value for my car is around $14,000. I had an offer from Carvana in March 2022 for $16,750. But what the dealership offered for a trade in was just laughable.

I traded in a perfect condition 2021 Honda Accord LX with only 24,000 mi. Not a scratch on it, interior was perfect. Right now they are selling for around 27, 000, they offered me 19. This made me really mad and I laughed and told them that I'm going to leave and go somewhere else and then they asked me how much I want for it and I said given that they're going for 27 and you guys have to make a profit, I'll do 24 which I only owed 23.9 so they paid off the car and I made $100. Immediately right there I made $5,000 over the original offer lol It also helped that I had an offer from CarMax for 25 that was months old

We sold or 2014 Nissan Murano to CarVanna for $2,000 more than my dealer offered in trade. They were okay with it. My sales rep even suggested checking with them. He figured they would give us more then his dealership.

I didn't want to complicate my dealership experience by adding the trade-in component ... and I didn't believe any offer would pencil out regardless. So after taking possession of the Maverick, I sold my 1999 Ranger XLT to a private party using "TRED," for about $2,300.00 more than the Carmax type offers.

$2 instead of $1? 🤣

Dealer didn't even want to quote my trade-in so the vending machine got it. They've had it for ~2.5 months and still can't sell it. Currently asking $1,240 over what they paid for it, after coming down $3,000.

Your trade value has likely gone down significantly in the last 2 months. Unfortunately the best time to trade was earlier this year. Use car prices are tanking, and dealers are getting a lot more conservative with trade offers. Get multiple offers, including from whatever brand your trade is. Most dealers will buy from you directly just like Carmax.

I just sold (not traded) my 2017 Chevy Cruze with 198k on it. Carmax offered $1800. Carvana offered $434, the Ford dealer where I bought my Maverick offered $1000, and the Chevy dealer where I bought my Bolt offered $2500.

That's what I did. My old car wasn't worth that much and I didn't want to be bothered selling it, paying taxes, etc., so I went in with some counteroffers and they gave me what I asked in trade. We weren't far apart to start but having options is what negotiating is all about.

Wholesale prices are dropping rapidly, so dealers are getting stuck with vehicles they overpaid for.

I traded in my XL Eco AWD 4k a few weeks ago, and negotiated up to 31k. It has been listed for over a week now at $34,988.

I hope they have to sell it at a loss after screwing me on price protection.

As others have said, go in with recent offers from Carvana (assuming they have not gone bankrupt), CarMax, etc. Your dealer may not be willing to match the quotes, but may be worth it if they are close. At this point, used car prices are falling like a rock. Per Black Book, wholesale prices on some types of cars were down over 3% just last week!!!! Overall, wholesale used car prices are down about 15% since this summer. As such, don't be too surprised if you offer is significantly less than that of a friend that sold their car at the peak earlier this year.

No matter what, the dealer is going to try to get it at a price that allows them to sell it (either on their lot or a wholesale auction) with about 20% markup. The first rule of business is "you make your money when you buy an item, not when you sell it". You normally will do better doing a private sale but in the current market that may or may not be the case. Also, it comes down to the dealer as to whether they are going to play games or not. Some will say something like "yes, we are adding a $2k ADM to the Maverick but are giving you $2k higher than normal trade-in so it all evens out". What they forget to say is that "normal" is pre-covid and they are screwing you on both the ADM as well as your offer. Most car dealerships prey on un-informed buyers.
